2001 Explorer XLT 4.0
Sorry if this is already been posted but I searched for a while and could not find an answer.

I had to replace the fan clutch on my 2001 Explorer XLT 4.0 SOHC. The parts store says if the truck was built on or before 11/13/2000 I need 1 model and if the truck was built on or after 11/14/2000 I need a different model. The sticker on my door sayd 11/2000. It doews not list the day. They only stock the newer model fan clutch so I bought it and installed it. It seems to be working.

How would I know if I installed the correct fan clutch?

I hoped the wrong 1 would have a different bolt size or possible not fit in some other way. I ask because it seems to be making a lot more fan noise than it did previously.

Thanks for the help!

You have an 01, therefore it's built after 11/14/2000.
Production for 2000 models would have stopped on 11/13/2000.

In some cases, mfg are producing the upcoming models 6 months prior to the years end (my Nissan is dated like this) or to make things really confusing, they make a mid year change to a currently produced model.

No, that's wrong. 2001 models started production well before then, most likely in September. The 01 models were available for purchase by November (I got one then). It is fairly common to have a build change like that a couple months in. When a parts store only has one part, it is almost always the later one, because the vast majority of vehicles out there are the later build. If you have an early build, you do have to watch out for those changes.

The build date can be looked up from the VIN, if the OP wants to provide it (or call a dealer and have them look it up for you).

If the fan is actually working when it is supposed to, it is probably OK. The additional fan noise may just be because the old one wasn't working.

It seems to be working. It isn't overheating which was the initial problem. I live in Southern California so I don't think it will get cold enough to ever over cool the engine.

Thanks for the responses and insight!
