all we did was plugs and wires and there was no spark and he had a parts car found the parts car was a 91 so the ecm was the wrong one and the diode was bad.. swapped the old ecm back in and it started but it kept backfiring through the intake. it acted like it was 180 out but there is no dist. but after backfiring a couple times it started but wouldn't idle, so we changed the idle air control and the idle smoothed out so we let it run and after a few minutes it died again but started right up, but when we tried to put it up on ramps so we could find the fuel filter it wouldn't pull itself up the ramps without dying it would pop and die. i am thinking egr or fuel pump i will know as soon as i do a pressure test. the sending unit doesn't,t work in the gas tank so it could be a poor ground. where is the electrical connector for the tank and how does it ground?

it ran well for a few minutes now it won't start again. i checked and no power to the ign fuse with the key on, i changed the relays with used ones still nothing, it cranks but no start, it sounds like backfiring it the air breather again. i checked all the ground connections they look good. maybe it is the battery cables the positive one looks kind of green and the negative won't clamp down tight but try to convince the owner. i tried to use a diagnostic tester but it wouldn't communicate with the computer to tell me why the check engine light came on.

does the ign fuse in the distribution box get its power directly from the battery? found a vacuum line off behind the intake it goes alongside the intake on the driver's side to a vacuum sensor replaced it with a short piece of flexible vacuum line now to get power to the ign fuse when the key is on.

I think you need to go to another forum. I'd suggest one but am afraid it'll get bounced.

Yes it does. The path is from the + terminal of the battery to a lug on the fender starter relay (red wire), then from that same lug to the power distribution box (black wire), then there is a buss in the power distribution box to the ignition fuse. There are two other wires on the same lug of the fender starter relay, both grey, both go to the charging system and don't sound related, just FYI.

ok i think it is his battery terminal the wires are just loosely crimped and the wire is not clean. and now it doesn't start again and i hear backfiring in the air intake.

finally figured it out it was the terminals to the battery and the terminals to the ign relay was bad. fixed all those and i hooked my spark tester up and i have spark now, in fact, the truck runs but no power and my spark tester started to slip so i reached up and grabbed it. i said a few words i should have. then we tested the fuel pressure and it was 25 pounds at idle and after wrestling the filter off the stuff that poured out was brown so we dropped the tank and the pump was covered in crude so he has bought a new filter and pump and it's installed just need a new fuel connector the sparing on the old one fell apart.
