ok im finally on the market for an explorer. i found one that sounds pretty good and im going to go check it out in person sometime in the next few days... here are the specs i know of so far:

1996 XLT V8 4WD fully loaded, ABS, leather interior, air, moonroof, stereo cd changer, power windows & front seats, rear vent with stereo control, keyless entry with alarm, running board, rack, alloys, towing pkg, new tires and battery. GREAT CONDITION, like brand new, well kept and always garage, fwy milage, oil change every 3k. -origional owner, 95k miles, no crashes, no engine trouble-

$9,900

is there anything i should look for or ask about when i go to see it in person? does this sound like a good deal? do you have any advice? also, what is the usual gearing for the v8 with towing package? i was under the impression that it was 4.10, but i heard that the v8's were all 3.55... wich is it?

im open to all suggestions! :bounce: yay car for me soon!!!

My AWD V8 explorer came with 3.73s.

do you have the towing package?

ok i just talked to the guy and i have arranged to see the car tomorrow at 5.... so if you have any input it would be greatly appreciated. this is my first time buying a car so i dont really know everything i should check for. i cant wait!

No V8 explorer was available with 4.10's to my knowledge.

Don't know if it's important to you or not, but you may want to verify the type of 4WD in it. I understand that the V8 only came with all-wheel drive--meaning it doesn't have a locking transfer case and no low range.

Seems like a good deal. I've seen better deals than that around here (IL) but i don't know the market in CA. That definately doesnt seem too overpriced though. Around here i've seen some 96's for the same price with 80k flat miles. Defiately a pretty darn good deal though.

alright, thanks! are there any last comments? im leaving in a few hours

So what's the scoop Chris? Did you look at it?

actually im just gonn leave right now... where on the door is the axle code??

Driver's door jamb, on the door. Labeled "Axle" hehe

alright, i just got back. the explorer looks great! i think its the one. the axle code was D4 so its a 3.73 limited slip. thats good enough... my dad is working out the final details on the phone right now and i should be picking up my new explorer tomorrow evening! i plan on lifting it 1.5 TT + 3'' body lift with some 33's sometime soon, and then eventually getting a suspension lift later on when i have more money. how do you guys think 33's will hold up on the 3.73 gearing? i might regear eventually but i dont know if i can afford it for awhile.

one thing... the check engine light was on and the guy said that he has had it checked out 3 times and it kept coming back, but his mecanic(sp?) said nothing was wrong so he just left it and its been on for a few years now. my first thought was the o2 sensors, just because im always reading about bad o2 sensors on this board. do you guys know of anything it might be? after i get the car ill prolly clean the maf, and maybe a few other little things that im hoping might help.

well anyway, im really excited to finally get an explorer!! (ive been readin up on this message board ever since my brother got an explorer 3 years ago)

check engine light

my check engine light came on when it was cold. There is a procedure to cancel it.....something like turn engine on and off 20 times quickly and it should go off. I found this on a web message board and it worked for a short while. then I noticed I was getting less heat but saw little difference on the engine temp. I changed the thermostat anyway and the light has never come on again and my toes stay warm and toasty now.
