97 EB edition
Well, the war machine has finally quit (well, its quitting). Anyway, I have a 97 4.0 SOHC EB edition with just under 100K. The transmission flares during breaking and just today has started to hard shift into 2-3. tack on h healthy dose of delayed shift and its really starting to tick me off. (I had a Toyota before, this kinda stuff should not be happening prior to 150K) anyway, my concern here is not that it needs work (VB rebuild for sure, thanks glacier, your posts on this subject have taught me much) my concern here is how bad it is.

Here is the kicker. I have really bad engine temp spikes at certain points (getting on the high way for one) the gauge will spike to redline in less then 30 seconds. 30 seconds later it backs off to 20% above normal operation temps. While on the road @ 60-70, temp stays stable, however, at certain points it will spike again. As of now I have no idea as to the cause (ie. Shifting to a certain gear, breaking etc).

Temp spikes aside, I also have a rattling sound coming from the engine compart when idle, and when in low gears. At high speed, no sound can be noticed. The sound is akin to taking a copper wire and rattling it inside of a coffee can.

So there is the problem, how bad cant it be I am wondering? A little background on the truck…. My father gave me the truck @ 70k or there abouts. Maintenance is impeccable, we have a folder about an inch thick with just the general stuff. AT fluid was replaced @ 60k. I have checked the AT fluid and it is full and smells pretty, oil level is great and engine coolant is topped off.

Oh guru’s of all that is ford?? Is there hope?
