Flashing indicator lights

My son's 1998 Explorer, 4.0 sohc AWD is flashing the OD, hi, lo indicator lights but it does not hunt. There is no feeling that the transmission is really shifting except the OD light will come on when starting from a stop. No clunking or banging. Transmission seems smooth and normal except for the flashing indicator lights. The lights do not show a pattern, they just keep flashing randomly.

There probably is codes stored in the computer get it read.

He took it to the auto parts store where they have a free read service. they said their machine would not read those codes. He was told they are GEM codes and they only handle "check engine" codes.
