I own a 93 Sport with the mazda 5-speed. and i've been having an annoying issue with the low range indicator light. I've spent 2 hours searching with no luck. When i first bought the truck last october, i was learning to use the electronic shift, i couldn't figure how to get it out of 4wd low. At the time i didn't know about this site and there was no owners manual with the truck. I figured since the local dealership was only a mile away, i'd creep along and get some help. The guy showed me what to do with the clutch and i was under way, but ever since then the 4wd low light has been on, but not at full strength, just a dull glow. The 4wd worked fine through that winter, but the electronic shift motor died in March 2007. Since it was March and i didn't need the 4wd, i didn't fix it immiedately, but over the course of the summer got a used 4wd switch and a new electronic shift motor. Today i put both in and the 4wd seems to be working as normal....but the damn light is still glowing. Now what are the chances that the replacement switch has the same problem as the old one? I'm thinking short somewhere....but any ideas where? anybody ever heard of this? oh and the 4wd high light has never given me a problem and has worked as it should. Thanks in advance for any help!

...it definately sounds like a short and since it is at half power, it means it is grounding to another hot wire...i wish i could be more of help...:D

It is common for the 4x4 indicator lights on the switch to partially illuminate. On my '93 the low range light would be dimly light several random times during cold months. You could try unplugging the battery to reset any codes or press the self test button the 4x4 shift controller module. In any case this issue is more of an inconvenience rather than a failure that requires a fix.. BTW if you haven't already done so take a peek at the Shift motor rebuild thread for lots of information and pictures.

Thanks for point that thread out ot me, i didn't think to put any sealant between the shift motor and the transfer case, i'll do that this weekend. and i guess i'll just have to deal with my dim glow.....oh well.
