I bought a remanufactured 4.0 liter engine for the Explorer and got it all connected properly but when i turn it over the flex plate tears into the starter top(part when the starter gear is all the way out) and i cannot figure out how to solve to problem.....would the fact be that they gave me a "manual" engine (bigger camshaft in their terms) instead of one that was a standard one? Help!

The only difference in the engine would be the bearing in the back, for auto or manual. Are you using the same flex plate as before?

I see what you mean by the engines, if so you can change the part in the back. But if that was the case im not sure if you would have gotten as far as you did. Some one here that knows alot more than me will help you out. Welcome to the site!!

ya its the same flexplate from the original engine, but new starter...this is the only problem i have

THERE IS A difference between the 5 speed and the auto starters. Make sure you have the right starter for your transmission.

its an automatic transmission with a brand new starter for an automatic. ill upload a picture soon of the starter if that helps any. How much would a 5 speed transmission conversion cost also?

there is no such thing as a manula transmission conversion kit, so it isnt possbile to calculate a cost.
You would need all the parts from a donor vehicle including the transmission, starter, linkage, wiring, pedals, computer, etc etc etc. Believe me I converted my truck from a 5 speed to a auto and it is not just a simple conversion. It spend months gathering parts and information to complete the swap, which I did in less than 3 days.

Now it sounds to me like you have either the wrong flexplate, the wrong starter or you did not install the transmission and converter properly.

Can you explain more what is happening and what work was recently done?

I just had the same problem I had a automatic starter in a 5 speed and it was staying engaged after starting the thing is an automatic starter has a much bigger nosecone than the manual the manual starters nosecone is only about 1 inch long and the auto is 2 1/4 inches long

engine swap basicly, the stock one blew a cylinder or two, stopped after i found 1 and put a remanufactured engine in in and bolted it up and cranked her over...and thats all
