Hey y'all,

I love this forum! I should have listened to you guys instead of the 'trained professionals'. '97 SOHC with 5 speed auto. I went in to have the pan removed and filter changed, and they talked me into a flush instead. All seemed fine afterwards. Leaving the shop, I drove about 40 highway and city miles, parked for about 40 minutes, reversed out of the space, put it in Drive, and it didn't shift until I gave it a little gas. Pulled into traffic, and it wouldn't shift out of first! It felt like it was slipping as well. Pulled over, shifted into Park, then Drive, slowly accelerated. It stayed in first wayyy too long, then slammed into second. Once before this and once after, there was no engine braking in first, but otherwise it engine brakes as normal. After this, it behaved normally through another 60 miles of mixed driving. Actually, it seemed to shift a little smoother overall.

I already searched and found plenty of folks with these symptoms that remain permanent once they occur. From what I've found, this could be the valve body gasket failing, but all others I've found have the symptoms permanently after they appear. Does this happen to you guys as a refilled transmission gets settled, or do I need to open it up before total failure occurs?

Major bummer, it was shifting like new before I had that stupid flush done. If you ever get a tech trying to tell you he knows better, smack him upside the head. This forum has gotten me more educated about these trucks than most techs I've spoken to.
