I know the headlights are 9007.But i pulled out a fog light bulb and it appears to be a 9005 or 9006 single beam bulb,I thought the bulb was supposed to be like a 890 or something ? I am thinking the previous owner wanted brighter bulbs and put em in.The sockets aren't melted or anything. They are bright for fog lights. But maybe thats because the bulb is the wrong kind ?

I also wanted to ad that the bulbs have a clear tip on them. Not painted.

they look something like this.

On a side note i looked at my headlight bulbs and they are from 1997 !:D .I cant believe it has original bulbs in it yet.I should hold onto them.

The 1998 Mountaineer went from H3 to 899 bulbs.
Sounds like you have the H3's.

BTW: Having your original 97/98 OE headlight bulbs still working isn't really that unusual, but they do dim with age so you should probably think about replacing them.

on my 2001 Mercury Mountaineer my fog lamps uses 9006 bulbs

Acording to a chart I found original equipment was H1 for the fog lamps.

No way in hell am i going to a 899 bulb LOL they are like 38W and the 9005 is 55w and the 9006 is 65w.I am willing to bet the original owner got rid of the 899's and put in 9005's.I think a 9006 would start to stress the circuit that was only for 38W originally.I mean **** the 9005's still aren't bright enough for me but i am not willing to go any higher tho.I know the 9007 headlights are 55W so i think a 9005 fog would match nicely at 55W.I wish i could tell you what bulb they are but they have no part number on them.I did ask a part store guy and he said they were a 9005 or 9006.

I can tell you for sure that they are not H1's or H3's.
