i was told that since the fog lights automatically turn off when you turn your high beams on. since the bulbs are so bright it telling the truck that the high beams are on. any ideas????????

thats how my x is too. when the high beams go on, the fogs go off. only way to get around it is to re-wire. it doesn't bother me so i left it alone.

is there anyone else who has had this problem and fixed it??

I don't understand the situation here. Are you saying that the fogs don't come on even when the headlights are in low-beams?? If so, you probably have a bad relay or a blown fuse.

If the headlights are in high-beam mode, switch it back to low-beams and see if it'll work. The high-beams will cancel out the fog lights.

here is exactly what happened. all the lights worked fine. then i found out that my headlights were 9007, thats what I have in my grand am (upgraded super white). I took the super whites out of the grand am and put them into the explorer and now my foglights wont even come on. I also have some extreme white headlights and matching foglights coming in the mail for my explorer I'm hoping that they work.

the headlights work fine on low and high beam, just no fogs:(

Bulbs or fuse or relay or switch. One of those pretty much gotta be your problem.
No..Not a common problem that has surfaced here anyway.

some guy that works at a car audio place told me that the headlights are basically telling the foglights that the high beams are on and thats why there not working. anybody ever hear anything about something like that.

I put Street Glow 9007's and didn't have any problem.

An Explorer isnt smart enough to know to tell the fog lights anything. Neither is the guy who told you that.
Simple elect. circut, thats all it is.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU....
tHATS EXACTLY WHAT i WANTED TO KNOW......
Your the man!!! let me ask you a dumb question.... how can I find the fuse and relay??? under the hood for the fuse??? or both????

Look in your manual and it will show the location of the fuses. Probably inside. Check some of the posts(search) for the location of the relay. (Fog lights on with high beams). I dont know where it is on a 99.

i wish i had an owners manual. i bought it used and it didnt come with one.

simple....

daytime running lights: no fogs
parking lights: no fogs
low beams: FOGS ARE ON!
high beams: no fogs!

a relay works by sending power/ or ground to it, you will hear a (click) and it completes the circuit to the component you want to use....hence, (for lights)

when your low beams are on...it sends power/ or ground to the relay....(click) completing the circuit to the fog lights...and voila, you have fog lilghts!

when your high beams are on...it sends power/ or ground to the relay...(click) cutting off power/ or ground from the fog lights and sending it to the high beams...and voila, you have high beams!

i think it is like that cuz of the wattage of them both...theres to much voltage going to the high beams and fog lilghts at the same time....it is engineered like that as a precaution...but what do i know, im just a mechanic....not a FORD

ok i see, what would you do in my case? I've got two brand new pair of xenon ultimate white headlites and foglights sitting in front of me. should i install them anyway and then trouble shoot from there?

if your fog lights dont come on when your low beams are on...then you got a bad fuse or relay...

I'll take a look at that today and let you know how it went. thanks again

Check your connectors also, unplug 'em and blow out any dirt inside and plug 'em back in...
