ford 8.8" strength

It looks alot likea a baja setup to me. Pretty cool looking, even if he doesn't need it, he has it!

Ben S - James duff no longer makes axle trusses for an 8.8. I talked to them personally about it. ALso, even If they did it wouldn't have fit for my axle because of the leafs mounted under the spring.

Im thinking about getting something custom made, but was wondering as to what would be the best Idea. I have seen some cusotm made that look alot like the james duff one, in the way it mounts, I have seen some were is is plate steel, welded to the top of the differential ( pic included since this might be a little hard to imagine), and I have seen a couple where it is just round tubing welded to trace the top of the axle housings/differntial, any Idea which would produce the strongest truss.....

Either one will greatly strengthen the housing and work well.
 






Any idea in cost difference, I have no problem spending more money to get a better job done, but if their all going to be about the same quality, do you know which would be the cheapest? I'll end up going to a shop and talking to them, but I like to be fairly knowledgeable, or at least sound like I am, when talking to people about purchasing parts/services. It seems to yield better results.
 






I would think both ideas would net you the same strength and cost, espically if a shop is doing the work. I custom fab shop will have a better idea what will work for your application.
 






The bracketry on the center section of the diff in that pic is for the linkage to mount to. It really does nothing as far as an axle truss. The box stock welded along the back of the axle strengthens the rear end front to back, though.
However, the best thing to make would be a truss to stiffen the axle from bending in the vertical plane (along the top or bottom).
 






CAC91 - Now that I look at it more closely, wonder what this guy plans on doing when the diff needs to be serviced. Its welded shut. Do you know whether round or square tubing would net more strength..... I would think that the round tubing itself would be stronger than the square tubing, but the square tubing would have more contact area with the axle, wonder which would strengthen the axle more.....
 






Ford 9"s have a removable third member that bolts on from the front. That's how they get away with the great trusses.

¿Do they make 'em for one that has a 4" suspension lift kit? ¿Do you know where I might could get one of them for less than $1,500 or even better less than $1,500 and with the new drive shaft? 2000 4dr 4wd XLT 3.73 locking all stock ¡¡¡NOT EVEN $$$ for 31's!!! Right now anyways

The dual shock hoops wre custom made, they cost me 200 bucks each for the hoops, and the fabrication of the lower mounts ( he re-did my lower a-arms, i believe i posted a pic of that also), but your stock a-arms might not be wide enough for the dual shcok set-up, you might have to replace your upper a-arm also. for one like mine with uniballs and heim joints and 10" of travel, I paid 900 for all of the a-arms, custom made.. Hope that helped, if you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask.
 






Sorry MonsterTrac, I have only seen the picture of the axle truss James Duff used to make. I do agree it does not look very solid. It was the only thing I could think of that you could buy as a truss. Also, I completely forgot about the spring under design. Hope you find your answers.
