Hello, I am a Ford Technician, I am factory certified and ASE certified I fix cars for a living and I bet I know whats wrong with your explorer. There is an open circuit between the switch and the tcm (transmission control module), I have have fixed this concern at work quite often on models between 91 and 94. The module is located in the rear driver side of vehicle, remove the panel where your jack and tire tools is and in front of it is the module. Pull the connector off (has at 10 mm bolt holding it on module), and inspect the pins in the connector, the pin for four wheel low tends to pull out of the connector. Push it back in and use silicone to keep it from pulling out again or you can purchase the whole harness (just kidding its to expensive). That will fix your problem I bet. Also by the way whenever you don't have your 4x4 button pushed you ARE IN TWO WHEEL
HIGH. Then when you select four high you are in FOUR WHEEL HIGH, and four low FOUR WHEEL LOW. How do I know well I am a Ford Technician and Supervisor in the shop and I am certified in every field. If you have any more problems let me know. Your welcome take it easy.

Its not everyday I get to pick a ford technicians brain..............so lets pick it...........QUESTIONS

I have 91 Explorer...v6

1. When the vehicle is cold it idles great while in drive or in park.

If the car is warm/hot it idles fine while in drive, but once I put it in park it idles high (2,500 rpm)

2. Knocking noise? When the car is cold no knocking noise. When the car is warm, there is a rythmic noise (knock) from the front. Noise comes and goes, but generally is only occurring when the car is warm. I only here it at idle (but I am sure it must be happening while driving I just can't hear it). I was not sure if it was the timing chain? an actual knocking noise on the engine? I have tried higher octane gas, thinking it may be actual engine knock, but it still happens.

Thanks.

Alex

well I can't here the knocking but there is something that usually causes a valve train tapping noise when hot. (note it is usually not as noticeable when cold), on the 4.0L engine its rocker arms are mounted on a shaft with three botls. If you remove this shaft and look where the rocker contacts the valve there will probably be some pitting. This can cause a tapping noise that is most noticeable when hot. However I can not here the noise so I can't give you a better answer. (is the oil pressure guage showing normal?). As far as the rpm goes, you have what you call a IAC valve attached to the top of the intake manifold, it has a two wire connector and looks kind of like a coke can connected to a small aluminum housing. This is an actuator that is used to raise and lower rpm in certain high demands situations (a/c on). Another thing is I can't remember off the top of my head if a 91 has a metered air system or speed density (in other words if it has a map sensor or a maf meter). If it has a maf then the idle air control valve is most likely the cause (like 90 % likely), if it has a map sensor then it could be a vacuum leak or the iac valve. Give me more specific info and I will try to give you a better answer. Oh another thing get it to idle high and then smack that IAC valve with a hammer 99% of the time if it is the IAC it will free up and idle back down after you smack it. If it does, definitely replace it. Good luck and when I say smack I don't mean with a 5 lb sledge as hard as you can I mean just a decent wack.

Hey I have a question to ask a good Ford Tech.

I have a rough idle all the time, and it drives me nuts. Alos the trucksometimes idles low when coming to a stop. I have replaced TPS, IAC, and have cleaned the MAF. What else could I do? Thanks in advance BTW, it's a 95 Explorer.

Thanks for the quick reply!

1. The engine noise I will have to dig in deeper... engine oil pressure normal...no burning oil...runs great when cool no noises......after I have driven it for a while and I stop...........it makes this noise (uhmmm now that I think about it, the noise is more evident because the engine is idling at about 2500 rpm when warm/hot)
I will fix the idle problem and then tackle the noise!

2. The idle problem I will check into!

Thanks

Alex

Hey Ford Tech can you take a look at this thread for me please. Dead Link Removed Thank you in advance.

Jason, I'm no technician, but you might want to have your fuel pressure regulator checked. I had this same problem a few months ago with the rough idle. I even noticed it running rough at high speeds (65-70mph). When it went into idle after coming to a stop the entire truck vibrated and felt like it was going to shake out from underneath me. I took it in to a ford dealership and they checked it and said I should replace the FPR and/or the EGR valve. So I had the FPR replaced, and put a new K&N filter in it. Now it runs fine, and I get better gas mileage too. (And the check engine light stopped coming on too). Just my $.02 worth of advice. :)

I have a question that you can hopefully answer. I have the 5.0 and when I start her up, she makes a whining noise and always makes this whining noise, the whining noise gets louder as the RPMs go up, what could it be?

hey dude...

can u tell me how to disable my alarm on an explorer 94 limited

its factory installed

i'm gonna pull my hair out

i opened it...

everything was fine...

opened the glovebox...

closed it...

then i thought the national guard showed up...its so loud!!!!!!!! wwwwwwwwwwwwoooooooooohooo woohoowohoow howo

how do i disable that piece of crap?

i'm about ready to get a hammer...

take it to my car...

any show that little alarm punk WHO IS BOSS!!!

...all in all...i just want to disable it without disabling keyless entry...

jeeze...don;t bombard the poor guy:eek:

hehehe i was thinking the same thing, this guy comes to the board says that he is a Ford Tech and now everyone has questions for him LOL.

Re: Ford Certified Technician

msupertek,
a couple of things that might help in diagnosing ae9169 issues..

The oil pressue guage is just an analog idiot light. If if remember correctly, anything above 5psi shows good. The sending unit needs to be changed and a 220 ohm resister has to be shorted out to make it act like a real guage (actually read the pressue)

he has a 1991 XL with a 4.0 OHV. All of the first generation explorers with OHV are MAS, not MAF. (I'm not positive on the newer ones but I'm pretty sure none of them have MAF.. )

You sure it's not something simple like a belt? My belt's been chirping lately, but only at idle... That's probably not what it is, just an idea though.

my mom had a chirp in her van and it was a pully bushing or something related to tthe pully

Maniak..........

1. My xl has an oil pressure gauge which reads half way...... no idiot light on the truck

2. And it does have an MAS

Ae1969,
do a search for "fake oil pressue" guage.. and you will see what I mean.. you have an analog idiot light.. as opposed to a digital one :).. It reads nothing or normal (I don't believe they will ever read high)..

All your guage tells you now is that you have 5psi of oil pressure, not that you have good pressure.. you need a real oil pressue sensor (you will know what I mean when you see the one you have compared with the one you need.. they are very different in size).

Rather than call it an idiot light, idiot gauge would be more appropriate. It has two settings readings, low and normal. It's not the traditional guage.

Regarding the MAS and MAF they are interchangeable and mean the same thing. MAF = Mass Air-Flow sensor, MAS = Mass Air-flow Sensor. Maniak, you might be thinking of the MAP (Manifold Air Pressure) sensor.

Thanks robert.. that is what I was thinking.. Yes.. the explorer has a MAS.. not map (I re-read what I typed.. and it confused me this morning also.... I wrote it late last night)..

I knew what I meant.. my fingers didn't

On my 98 XLT SOHC, where can I hook up a sending unit for a digital oil pressure gauge?
