- 1996 Explorer XLT 5.0
I wanted to introduce myself, I am Max from Staten Island NY and i stumbled across this site and it has a ton of great information and useful links. The truck i am driving now is a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT and it's also a very rare production truck it's a 5.OL High Outout V8 and it's only rear wheel drive. This truck is one of 308 ever made rear wheel drive with the high output motor, so it's basically a GT Mustang with a truck body. I love the truck it's perfect in ever way, i work as a contractor on the side so i load the truck down and tow trailers with it . I literally overload it and tow 12,000lbs trailers and the truck is rock solid. On the highway it's awesome i take long trips constantly and it hold 85 with ease ( last trip to NewOrleans 3200 miles) The truck is great on gas and without a front axle it's ver easy to drive. My father bought it when it had only 12,000 miles from the dealer and gave it to me as a gift. It never gives me problems and i can smoke any import off the light. As far modifcations i have held back thus far, CD changer, some chrome, upgraded ignition ,suspension upgrade nothing radical yet. The only problem that i didn't expect was that the front bearing went at 80k , it's an easy fix but i didn't expect it to happen other than that it purrrrrrss like a kitten.
As far as me i can provided a ton of mechanical info i worked as a mechanic for a restoration shop for several years and i know the Fords and GMs inside and out. Some of my creations include- a 1986 Pontiac Bonneville with GM 5.OL,completely redone inside, totaly restored (off frame ) i gave it to my grandpa and he sold it to a local dealer who put it in his showroom- next 1987 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight Regency also total restored with air suspension, apline stero system and a supercharged 3.8L ,dual exhaust all the tricks ( an old man's sleeper) -sold- next came my BMW screwup i restored a 1986 BMW 325e fun car to drive with the manual transmission but not big enough and not mean enough- sold at ebay auction- then came one of my favorites a 1988 Mercury Grand Marquis 5.0 , 2 inch lift in front and 4 in rear, flowmasters, high velocity injectors, restored body and interioir, completely black with black leather and lots of chrome, it smoked accords and civics with ease- sold on ebay- next was my favorite car until now 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII completely restored, air suspension all the bells and whistles, 4.6L 32valve V8 just like the Cobra Mustang, with a manual mustang tranny, it's the only one probably in the country with manual trans, I won eleven best in show and design awards with it, but it got stolen at Homedepot of all places.
So now i have the explorer and i love it, i am thinking of dropping a manual trans then it would be perfect maybe a 2inch lift the truck would kick ass, it would be a offroad Mustang ( and i can get through any trail with my 2wd without problems)
Thanks for the membership and i hope i can help you'all out
