2001 Sport Trac 4wd
I went to pick my son's Sport Trac from having the engine replaced with a used one. There was a white ST in the parking lot and I asked about it. They said the mechanic that put the engine in my son's truck owned it. He said he put an engine in his awhile back. Except he put a V-10 in it from a E-350. He used the transmission from the E-350, his truck is 2 wheel drive. He is using a V8 Explorer radiator, had to relocate the brake booster, fuse box, overflow and reroute the steering shaft to clear the exhaust. The engine is way back with good room between the fan and the radiator. It looks pretty stock. He said it is real fast, not sure I totally believe spme of the speed and mpg numbers he gave so I won't post them. Below are the pictures.

Pffft.

What a waste. Had all the room in the world in there for a V12.

Kidding!

That's Effin' Badass!

Interesting what he did to the AC box.

Happy Fools Day! :p

+3. That's unbelievable. Really curious about the owners claimed "numbers". Any issue posting them anyway? LOL

This is no April fools day prank. Alright I will post what he said but I feel sure there was some exaggeration, he said it would run 160mph and get 35-40 mpg. Don't flame me, All I know is there is a V-10 in a Sport Trac and its his daily driver.

LOL!!!! I had a V10 in a much heavier Excursion and I got 12 mpgs at best. He may be getting 15 mpg's but even that would be perfect conditions. V10's are for torque, not mpg's or speed.

Wow. He must have used a shoehorn to stuff a V10 in there. Just goes to prove that you can pretty much stuff any engine into anything if you have enough fabrication skills. Ever see a mid 60's Corvair with a 350 V8?

Considering the v10 is an all aluminum and a sport trac is half the weight of an excursion I bet it has great power and gets great fuel economy. Probably not over 20 mpg ever but still super sweet.

Thats the great thing about the internet, people can say whatever they want, and others will believe it

So what exactly are you saying?

I'm saying if anyone believes this guy is getting anything over 20 mpg and driving it 160 mph, then they are not being realistic. Sure he put a V10 in a Sport-trac, hell a guy put one in a Mustang. But the claimed numbers are ludicrous.

Oh, I agree his speed and MPG are totally ridiculous fabrications. There's no way a Sport Trac would ever hit 160 MPH, no matter what engine you stick in it, nor would it ever get 35-40 MPG unless it was rolling down a hill 40 miles long.

As I said he had to have been streching the truth about his numbers. Thats why I didn't even want to mention them at first. He did a good job putting my Son's engine in. What's weird is most of what he said seemed acurate and was visible to my somewhat trained eye. He said he has the 3.55 gears with the V-10's five speed automatic transmission. This took alot of work and is real tite against the firewall. Maybe his speedo is way off which would make him think he is going faster and further than he really is.

This is very possible. When I first did my v8 swap in my ranger it felt fast and I felt like recording my speedo. That is until I used GPS to check my speed(was wondering why everyone was going 90 in a 65).

I'm not saying it isn't outstanding, because it is. I would think the guy took gears and recalibration of the speedometer into consideration. I would love to see a video of it.

I'm sure the V10 gives great acceleration over the original V6 and 3:55 gears seem like a good street choice, however aerodynamics have a great deal to do with the top speed achievable. The ST has the aerodynamics of a barn door and is quite high off the ground. Ford even limits the top speed of these trucks (and all Explorers) because they can become very unstable at high speed. I would think other Ford pickups would have a similar max speed restriction. If the guy reprogrammed his PCM to eliminate the max speed parameter my guess would be that the max speed he could get out of it would be around 130 (and that would be a scary ride).

This is kinda like swapping a 460 in for fuel economy. I could see 20mpg but not 40mpg

I have a friend (who'll be 77 this month) with a 2007 Shelby with the supercharged 5.8. He's added an intercooler (or larger one maybe), changed pulleys, has a free - flowing exhaust, etc. He hit 150 mph, and held it, on the interstate in Montana(?) 2 years ago. I got to take a short ride with him last month. Been in some fast cars, but none like this one! It sounds, feels, and rides like an old school muscle car, but with modern power technology. I believe his 150 mph story, but can't see a Sport Trac getting anywhere near that. My '74 Ranchero with the modified 472" 460 and 3.50 gears was heavy, but probably less than an ST, maybe a bit more aerodynamic, and closer to the ground, and it wouldn't have come anywhere close to that. And I wouldn't have wanted to, either.
