Found a way to stop high RPM start up

Hmmmm...

I'm not sure if I want to jump in this or retired thread. However, my '03 revs to about 3K rpm every single morning for the past two months. Temp outside has ranged from 50s to 97. So am I to understand that when my truck cranks up in the morning and its 70 degrees that 3000 rpm s normal?

Most assanine thing I have ever heard! I have owned every American and most Asian brands of cars. I have lived from Miami to the mountains of NC and never once in the 22 years I have been legally driving have I had a vehicle that revved that high on start up.

I say all of that to say this, what the hell is wrong with this piece of crap exploder? I need to keep it on the road, but can't afford to watch an 1/8th of a tank of gas disappear very Imelda I turn the key. Doesn't happen just mornings, happens at lunch and when I leave work at 6 everyday.

Any help would be appreciated.

I suppose there's a reason that the POS Ford SOHC engine does this (the V8's don't rev that high). I've owned more vehicles than I can count (mostly new) and have never had any other engine do this rpm at startup. I've always cringed when my SOHC flaired at 1st cold startup of the day (not as bad on successive starts). I own classic cars that sometimes go for months w/out being started. when I start them I let them crank until I see oil pressure, and then give them some fuel. that way the bearings are all lubed before the relative violence of starting happens. pre-oilers are a great way to prolong engine life, and freshly rebuilt engines are always primed before their first startup. if you believe it's beneficial for an engine to start with a 2500 rpm idle, I don't understand your logic. believe what you like. my SOHC finally destroyed itself last month and has gone to the scrapper. good riddens! I'll never have to hear that sound again.

That's why I never will own any explorer other than V8 again. At least not for my daily driver. Add to the scrapyard the 5r55e trannys.

I'm with you brother... V8's rule!

The 2nd generations in good shape are getting hard to come by where I live. It took me over a year to find my last one and it has more rust than I care for. Time to start traveling, lol.

yeah, that's the good thing about GA. not hard to find totally rust free trucks. my '01 EB and '00 2WD Mountaineer don't even have rusty bolts underneath. it makes then really easy to work on. I spent over 40 years in CT so I know rust. the big issue down here is usually cooked interiors, but the Ford interior materials hold up surprisingly well.

Here's the crap I go through here. Check out the mileage, yet look at the new parts he says this thing has. The "exhaust work" he talks about is a cracked passenger exhaust manifold that he swore to me costs 40 bucks and takes an hour to install, lol. He didn't like it when I told him I'd done a couple and they're 150 for the manifold and a royal pain to replace. He's had it for sale for almost a year and it started out at 3 grand. If his story hadn't changed so often I'd probably give him 1800, but once the story's change there's usually something going on.

yeah, it can be a pain finding the right vehicle. last year I found a '01 Merc Premier I really liked. I was 1.5 hrs away from where I live. I told him i'd come to see it the next morning (cash in hand) and was ready to buy it if it checked out. he said okay. I drove 3/4 of an hour and he calls me, in route, to tell me he had someone else coming to see it in the next 30 mins and that he'd call me back if it didn't sell. I was pissed and told him to shove it. oh well, I ended up finding an even better Mountaineer the next week.

I've been playing around with this for about 2 weeks now. My 98 SOHC has the 1 second rattle on start up. Ford doesn't help things with the high RPM surge on a cold start, but I think I've found a way to a more compliant start.
This has been working for me for the most part.

Cold start up - Turn the key to the on position, depress accellerator to the floor once and release, turn key to start the truck. I've noticed the start up only revs to about 1500 RPMs with hardly any chain rattle. This morning I did not do the above and got a typical start up flair that sored up over 2 grand for a second with an intense chain rattle.

Give this a try and report back in this thread. I think I'm onto something here.
I want to thank you. mine was revving up more than 2000. I tried what you said and it works. it was normal . thanks again. god bless you!! the pastor said in a sermon yesterday that you know how to do something , you need to help others that don't.
