Heres the breakdown:
-98 Eddie Bauer 4.0 SOHC.
-Loaded with everything
-Mint condition in every way
-104,000 miles but it was owned by a ford
engineer and it started up perfect and seemed
to run perfect
- Asking price is $8500

I am pretty set on buying it with a few questions. I have an explorer now and have had one other one about 8 months ago but this would be my first SOHC. Is there any common problems I shoud look for? Also can anyone give me a guess on what my insurance would be? I am 18 (b-day yesterday) and have a clean driving record. Im just looking for a ballpark figure untill I can get a hold of my insurance agent. Thanks in advance.

Do a search for SOHC problems, there are several known problems with that engine, Ford extended the warranty of some parts because of failures. Intake manifold O rings, and other stuff. The bad news is the extended warranty won't do you any good because the miles are too high on that X to still qualify.

On a side note, 104K miles on a 98 is high miles, so $8500 seems a bit steep. Even if it is loaded. Make sure you also have the tranny checked, they are known to fail.

I'd take the VIN to a dealership and see if its had all its TSBs done. If so, offer him 8k.

My GF got her '98 SOHC Sport last summer for $8k (from a dealer  ) with less than 80k on it. Have you kbb'd it?

If it was owned by a ford engineer he probably know about all the SOHC problems and had everything done. That or he has some prototype parts !
Sounds like its a pretty good deal, but those miles are high... I would haggle on that one.

I thought that price was pretty low but I guess not. I have not even looked on kbb because I was pretty sure that was a great price. Glad to here its not as good a price as I thought though. If it goes over good with the mechanic Ill offer him 8 grand or so. Thanks for all the input.

Offer him a thousand less than he's asking. If you really want it and can't stop thinking about it buy it!

Insurance Qoute

I'm in the business and chose my insurance carrier after an internet search. You can get price qoutes from most carriers online. Check it out.

21st Century best for me but it has been many years since I was 18!

Good luck

IN my area that price is quite steep. fr 8500 you could get 75k. Always start the haggle too low. You can always go up. Explorers are everywhere. If you miss this one there will be another.
