I have a very high mileage 93 xlt 4 door, 4x4. It either has 250k or 350k, but I am pretty sure it is 350. It has an all original drive train.
The motor still runs, but makes a clacking noise under load, usually anything more than 3/4 throttle. It seems to have significantly lost power in the last 50k miles that I have had it and been driving it. My parents bought it in 93, my sister drove it for a few years, then I started driving it about 2 1/2 years now.
Eventually the motor is going to stop working. Quotes I have gotten for a reman. engine are between $2000 and $2300. With estimates of the cost of labor between $1500-$2000. I have been thinking about buying one of the Shop manuals on CDR, to see if the motor swap is something that I could do.
Could anyone tell me how difficult of a swap this would be? Has anyone done this and could give me a general idea? I've taken the motor outof my Jeep but never a newer vehicle.
Another problem is-With the new, more powerful motor, is the 5 spd tranny going to hold up? What other o/d transmission will bolt to the 4.0 and to the stock t/c?
My sister backed into a few things, so the rear bumper is screwed up, as well as two other dents from her. One in the lift gate and one in the left quarterpanel. The front left fender is screwed from when I lost a wheel begining of summer and just recently I scraped against a tree, putting a small dent on the right quarter panel right over the wheel. on top of that I am starting to get significant sun fading on the roof and now the hood. So it needs a fresh paintjob.
I plan on keeping the X as I really like it, despite its lengthening list of issues. I am worried that when I start to fix things, is when other things are going to start to break. Its going to take X thousand of dollars to fix it to be a decent vehicle again, but I'm probably better off doing that than to buy someone elses used vehicle. But right now its starting to look kinda bad and its not quite so fun to drive because of the aging motor.
