this past weekend was the first decent snowstorm (5") i was able to drive in (i didnt have my license last winter). my question is why do they call it four wheel drive, instead of four wheel "fun." it is awesome knowing that you wont have to wory about fish tailing while driving up hills to get to your house. i cant wait for a big storm to come. we usually get one that brings at least a foot every winter. just thought i'd share the joy. happy wheeling.

yeah, we were hit with a lot of snow too. it took me about 45 minutes to drive less than 10 miles because the roads weren't plowed and there was a little more than 8" on the roads ate the time. lots of people were stuck.

Ken, just be careful and get used to winter driving before you go having too much fun. We don't want something bad to happen to you or your truck. Remember, don't drive harder than conditions allow just because you have 4x4. It may make it easier to drive in adverse conditions, but it doesn't make the truck invincible.

Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now.

Along the lines of what Alec said, the biggest thing you have to be aware of is not to get too confident because you have 4x4. Because as soon as you're off the gas and on the brakes it doesn't make a difference. I suggest when there is no one around driving down one of those hills and trying to stop. Get used to the feel of antilock breaks, like when they kick in, and how much steering you have when you're on the brakes. You just want to be ready for any situation you might be faced with.

P.S. A lot of fun can be had in the snow in 2WD too. ;)

Biggest thing to remember about driving a 4x4 in the snow...YOU DON'T STOP ANY FASTER THAN A CAR!!! More than once I have watched someone in a 4x4 buzz by me (back when I had muscle cars) in the snow, and then I'd find them in a ditch up the road 'cause they forgot that they stop just about the same as a car.

4wd is fun in deep deep snow.. but I think its MUCH easier to do donuts in 2wd :)

especially if you have the limited slip rear.
there's a huge parking lot down the road from my house and the store went out of business, so they never plow it. that's the best place for donuts.

mmmmm....donuts...:)
:bounce:

hehe. I dont have LS, but I can still do some pretty cool stuff with it :D

i can barely get the back end of the ranger to swing around into a donut. like, i crank the wheel over to the left, and then i just turn, i floor it, and it just turns, no donut. its retarded. i can only do them when i have momentum on ice, but then its easy to just slide the front wheels.

sometimes i think i get better traction in the 2wd open diff ranger, than i do in any other car we have, that quickly fades once i try to stop. whoever thought ABS in the rear was enough is a fuktard

4x4 is great in powder....however driving anything on ice is dangerous..like others ahve said dont get to over confident... you do stupid things that you wished you hadnt... you also learn too....

thats ok. you are absolutely right. i was already been "calmly told" by my dad that if i hurt the truck, i will not drive it anymore. i have no problem with that, and i respect that. he also told me that next time he is gonna come with me because he wants to try. lol

man you're taking me back

i remember the first big snow w/ my x, dec93 28.5" in 48hrs, i went up the street to a softball park by my old house, the parking lot was around 15 acres, i must have played out there for at least an hour.:bounce:

if you aren't use to four wheeling in the snow, they can get away from you at times, this would be a great way to find out how your truck can react in different situations, thats how i taught the wife
