Fram = HORRIBLE FILTER

I've used Fram as far back as I could remember. They advertise them as though they were the Cadillacs of oil filters, or so they say. When I first found out they were not as good I just bought 2 packs of them at Costco for cheap. I will surely change to something else next time around.

I also use the Purolator PureOne filter. I've used a Fram once, but didn't pay attention to the results, it was a long time ago. I use Purolators almost exclusively due to their availability

Not all motorcraft filters are the same however. Not trying to start a fight here, but I have been working at auto parts store for 6 years now and we used to sell Motorcraft filter for around $6. People would come in and yell at us all the time they can get the same filter at Walmart for $3. Why is that? yes, walmart has some huge buying power.
A couple guys i worked with tried something one day then. We took a Motorcraft filter bought at Walmart, one of our own motorcraft filters and one motorcraft filter we bought at the ford dealership. All were FL1A I believe or all were the same i know that.
When we cut them open we noticed none of them looked the same inside. They were all different.
Point being is that Walmart will may tell motorcraft how they want there filters built so they can sell them at a cheaper price. Just like my store may talk with motorcraft and have certain critera also as does the dealership. But it still has the same box and same name...motorcraft, but are they all the same quality?
Not walmart bashing here, heck, i buy alot of my stuff from there as well...just giving you a different insight

I run OEM oil filters in my vehicles. Motorcraft for the X and Delco for my slow GM turd.

I have used fram filters on most of my cars and never had a problem. I run mobil 1 synthetic 5w30. I change it every 3K miles and the oil looks blacker than night. I also have a heavy foot on the gas. I figured it was probably because I run the X hard, nut could it also be because of the filter?

i feel it chould be a crime to run mobil1 with a fram filter but that is just me

I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic oil and motorcraft filters for years now and every time I change the oil on my explorer (every 5-6K miles) the oil is very black and dirty, so the color of the oil probably is not a factor.

Impossible to judge oil quality by its color. Quality can only be determined by an analysis.

All aftermarket (sold at parts stores and dealerships) Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator.

The filters that come on the engine from the factory are made by Champion labs. Ford does this for a few reasons. The champion filters filter better to catch the extra crap during break in. It also aids them if there is any oil related failure during the warrany period. They can cut the filter open and if it's champion your screwed because they know you didn't change the oil.

I've read that all the frams are bad except for the x2s.

The filters I usually buy are either the Mobil 1s, K&Ns, Motorcraft, or the Fram x2s.

Prices vary by the lab. The lab I use, Blackstone Labs, charges $20.00 per test and supplies free test kits. Take a look at Dead Link Removed

There are many oil experts who frequent http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=3;DaysPrune=1000 . You can post your analysis results there and those guys will evaluate the data for you. Log on there and look at some test results and their meaning.

How many people really have an engine failure that is directly related to oil / oil filters? I would think that other items like water pump failures would contribute more than just wear from the type of oil/filter you use.

Most of us here are already ahead of the game because we change our oil and filters on a regular basis - no matter what brands we use.

Have you ever gone to buy a vehicle from a private owner only to find out they have no clue when the oil was changed last? Truely scary.

The cost of testing the oil is the cost of an oil change. Wouldnt it be better to spend the 20 bucks on a change?
