Hey guys, I had gotten alpine type s speakers from bestbuy as a x-mas gift, with full replacment 4 year warranty and let me say, its comes in hand. Yesterday after blowing the front speakers for the second time I decided to change brands, at no cost :) and went with infinity reference 6x8's.

Does anyone have any feedback on these? are the alpines better? the reason I went with the infinitys is because they have a little bit more of an rms. Well any thoughts, comments, and criticism would be apreciated. Thanks, Jon

I used to have type-S for the 4 speakers -front and rear (SPS507a) and 2 type R subs for the rear. I found the front Alpine speakers a bit "muddy". The highs weren't as clear as I wanted them to be. Of course, this is just from my perspective/opinion. I changed them to Infinitiy speakers (REF6812CF) - and they were pretty good and were much better than the 5x7 alpines. A friend accidentally damage them so I had to replace them with another set. Unfortunately, they were out of these speakers from my nearest local retailer so I ended up getting Clarions (SRC5795). They're actually "separates" mounted on a 5x7 plate instead of a multiaxial driver. Either way, I still found the clarions and the infinity better than my alpines.

You'll love the clarity, crispness and precision of the Infinity's. Especially if you step up to the Kappa's or Kappa Perfects.

I vote Boston :)
I dislike the sound from Infinity car speakers, but thats just me and you asked for opinions :)

thanks for the replies guys i am liking the infinitys so far but its hard to tell yet if there is a difference. I have only listend to them for about 5 min but they sound just as good from the little bit I have heard. I would love some bostons but the price and lack of availabilty steer me away.I like to be able go to a place if I have a problem with them.

what kind of radio and amp are you using to power them?

harmon karmen speaker sound fawkin amazing in car's....i rode in a buddy of mine's 3.330 XI.......it sounds awesome.....i kind of liked the infinity system in my dad's old 300m....but thats me....

I've got a set of Audiobahn 6x8 AS68Qs in back and Infinity Kappa 682.7 up front. I've beat them and I've already blown one of the Infinity. They even came with crossovers and the Audiobahns didn't. I paid over 3 times the price for the Infinitys than the Audiobahn speakers, and they are holding up strong..

yeah these infinity and the alpines both have crossovers built on , I THINK. They have what looks like a ?resistor? don't know if thats the correct word for what it is.

If they are attached to the speaker they are resistors. Crossovers are little boxes. The Infinitys came with them. I'm pushing 50 watts RMS to them and they are rated at 100 watts RMS/300 peak. Pieces of **** already blew. I would get some more Bostons, but they are too pricey for the moment

ahh ok they are resistors, what is the point of them anyway? I would love to go with some nice components or good quality speaker but money and local availability limit my options. I could order from crutchfield but I am impatient and hate waiting for packages to arive lol. I am pushing more power then I should be to the speakers but I dont really care since its costing bestbuy money , not me only thing it costs me is 10 minutes of my time to swap them out.

I have another question. My front ones always seem to be the ones to blow, not the rear ones, why would this be if they are both amped, left side front and rear to one channel and right side front and rear to one channel? I wouldnt think there would be any front/rear bias since they are amped to one channel per side not per speaker.

The resistors help with the wattage rating and help keep them from blowing.

I feel you about the front ones going before the back ones, and that has been true for the past 4 vehicles I've owned. I always mess around with the balance to put more on the back ones and front ones, but it was too late to do it on the Infinitys. I figured since they had crossovers they'd be fine, but they weren't.

they are capacitors, not resistors. the capacitor acts as crossover for the midrange and/or tweeter(s) mounted on the speaker

The Alpine's are very very nice speakers. The only Infinity speakers we sell at Best Buy are the References. They're OK, but I personally prefer the Alpines, esecpially if you're not going to put in subs. They have very nice bass and the highs and mids are nice.

You are indeed right, the replacement plan kicks ass. One of our guys in the Home Theatre department has managed to blow like 6 Type R Alpine 12s. I don't know how, but it saves you a LOT of money.

I'm assuming this has something to do with the volume of air that the driver has to work in. On my car (not my X), I kept blowing the front speakers. Since they were mounted on a dash location (instead of the usual door panel) the speakers were basically running "free-air". By making a semi-sealed enclosure for the speaker, I seem to have solved the problem. Havent blown a front speaker since.

So you're running both Left speakers to one side and right speakers to the other channel? This is just me, but maybe it would be nicer if you add another 2 channel amp to drive the fronts against the rear. That way, you would be able to make fine adjustments to the sound as well as not have "positioning" problems. The sound from the rear speakers reach your ear longer versus the front speakers. For some, this delay may not be an issue but for better performance, I'd recommend the separate amp - then again - its just my opinion

I if I buy another amp , It will be a 4 channel so I don't need to run anymore wiring. I am only running the 2 channel because I had it sitting in my closet collecting dust and figured its only a year old and it still has a lot of life left in it , I may as well use it. I was thinking about buying those inserts that go behind the speakers to give them a better response in a tighter spot but Im not sure its worth it.

::::NEW ADDITION::::
Today I pulled out all of the wiring I had from the car phone my father had put in when he bought the X new in 94. There was A LOT of wiring I gotta say, like I took about 4lbs of wire all together. I have XM run through the HU like the pioneer set up so I dont need an fm transmitter, and today I installed a Sirius Fm transmitter on the old mount for the cell phone, looks professionaly mounted on the tranny hump with all my other stuff.

My friend has Sirius so when ever she gets in the car we have the choice of XM or sirius, Its really nice, the one with the 1.5" plasma screen. I set it up so nothing shows except the antenna out side, no wires, including the one that runs to the cig outlet, I ran it under the carpet and thru the dash and just took out the ashtray since no one smokes in my truck.
