1998 explorer sport
My grand father just got a new 2003 ford explorer xlt and they come with full coilover independant suspension. When I took a look at it, the first thing that came to mind was would it fit on my 1998 explorer sport. If anyone has any idea or some info to share on this subject I'd love to hear it.

i dont think anything actually comes with a real coilover... it is probably just a strut type design.....

To my knowledge, the new Explorers have a strut-type setup in the front and coilovers in the rear. I don't want to even begin thinking about swapping this setup into a 2nd gen. You would probably have to start by swapping the frame. :p

Front suspension

I only want to modify my front suspension, and figured that coilovers would work the best. However, I haven't found coilovers for my car or a kit to do the conversion. My question is aside from removing the torsion bars what else would have to be modified? Then once i can use coilovers which do I use? I thought the 2003 would be the easiest conversion.:(

www.summitracing.com has QA1 coilovers. you can get them in any length, and springs for just about any rating. last time i checked, they were around $450 a set for the front of an X.

the mounts on both the frame and the control arms will have to be VERY beefy. that is, obviously, because they will support the entire frontend weight. there are no "lowered coilover conversion kits", it will all have to be custom fabbed.

$$$$

platnumized02, you have to understand that the new Explorers are totally redesigned, and share almost no similarities with 2nd gen Explorers. Therefore nothing will just "swap over."
