Noticed a grinding noise when I was backing outta the garage this morning..seems to be coming from my front wheels.. Any ideas? I have not heard any popping or girnding when I turn my wheels.

Check the condition of the brake pads and distance of wear indicator to rotor and let's go from there.

I also have been hearing a grinding or squeeking noise coming from my front end for quite some time now. I have a '00 AWD and the noise is pretty bad. It's really loud when going over bumps slowly and turning the wheels. Sounds like squeeky bed springs or a creeking door. I have greased all the bushings before and made it stop for a little while, but it only lasts a week or so. I think the shocks need to be replaced but I don't think that is what's causing all the noise. Any ideas?

check your wheel bearing/hub assembly.. More than likely that is the culprit if the brakes check out.

low speed "grunts" = ball joints

It could be an accumulation of rust on the cast iron rotors from sitting over the weekend in humid conditions. The first push of the brakes is usually enough to make it go away. If it persists, however, look at rotating parts: Hubs, brakes, and CV joints all come to mind.

Mine makes tons of noice too =[

I'm ready to tear into the front end and change just about everything....

Finally a diagnosis!

Took my Explorer to have it looked at and turned out all the noise was coming from a worn out ball joint. Congratulations IZwack! You know your stuff!

wow -- that doesnt happen very often :D

BTW -- thanks for posting the solution to your problem -- sometimes we have people asking questions and then never post back what exactly the solution was

No problem. That's what this board is for. Too bad everyone doesn't do it though. My mechanic replaced the old ball joint with one that has a grease fitting which is nice. It cost $100 to get it fixed and well worth it. Just wished I had done it 6 months ago!

That is cheap! It's nice to see some honest & reasonabl priced shops still exist.

Where I live they would chrage $100 just for the ball joint.
