Front end noise.

i have a 1998 mountaineer and it runns and drives fine when it is in auto 4wd but when i engage 4wd high the front end makes noises only when i turn. so i figure its not the outer driveshafts because they would make noise all the time. its a kind of a clunking grinding noise. do the front diff mounts ever come loose because that would change angle of shafts and axles for the grinding noise any help would be awsome thanks joe

If it's on dry pavement, it's normal. It's bonding in there since the wheels can't freely spin. If it's on wet pavement and it's happening at 1/2 to full turn, that's pretty much normal too, unless it's a major really loud clunking and stuff.
