Colder air IS more dense and you will get increase in horsepower. Some say every 20-30 degree drop you'll gain 1 or 2 horsepower.
But, cold dense winter air doesn't burn off gas as well as slightly warmer air, which will hurt your gas mileage. Your engine burns off gas best when warm.
