In late November I bought a very well used 2001 ST. It has 221,000+ miles on it and is in need of a lot TLC. One of the big issues that I was worried about was the hard starting and poor acceleration. It could barely get out of its own way and wouldn't really accelerate above 3500 rpm. I cleaned the IAC and MAF with no significant improvement. I finally realized that it was probably just simple fuel starvation. It had 52 psi of fuel pressure at idle and up to about 2500 rpm but above that it dropped almost to 30 psi, and this was in park with no load on the engine.

I believe that it had the original fuel filter in it as it was labled FORD and not MOTORCRAFT. The black grit and crap that came out of the inlet end was scary and impressive. With the new filter in place the pressure was at 52 psi from idle to almost full throttle. It never dropped below 48 psi. The driveability improvement is amazing. It is now very peppy and accellerates nicely. This is a great forum. The info available is wonderful!
