I own a 2005 Explorer XLT. It has a very slow gas guage. Does anybody know how I can fix this thing? The gas guage begins reading about the third or fourth time I run the truck. Why does it do this?. Please help.

Welcome to this forum! I've renamed your thread, and moved it into the stock 2002-2005 section. You might have a problem with the sending unit or the float which is connected to the sending unit. I think that there might be a TSB on this issue.

A slow gas gauge is a good thing! That means great gas mileage. Joking. Sounds like a sending unit to me too. I had a Ch**vy Blazer and it started that. It would read full till you got to like half a tank then it would read close to right. After a while of that it finally died. You could fill it up and it went up to full but would never go below 3/4 a tank. So I had to use the trip meter and hope for the best.

Thank you! Does anybody know how to repair this problem? Do you have to replace the gauge in the gas tank itself?

Well if it's the sending unit, you have to drop the tank and remove the fuel pump and sending unit assembly, and replace.

It looks like we have this problem to add to the bad rear blend door actuator for the rear air conditioning.

Is this something that someone can do themselves? Please help.

I have a stock 2004 and it is giving two codes a fuel sender hi range and a sender low range. the check engine light is lit as well as the fuel guage always says E.

I believe this is the tank sender and pump, I also have the "K" vin code for flex fuels.

So the question is can I run the standard fuel tank sender and pump or do I need to buy the expensive flex fuel one. difference in price is $200. the stock one is 180 and the flex is 380.

We have the flex fuel vehicle. Lucky us. We never get it because we don't feel like we get as much mileage out of the flex fuel.

My wife is driving the vehicle. She filled it up and the gauge didn't move after leaving the gas station. She stopped where she needed to go, turned off the ignition and when she started it back up the gauge went up like normal. Now its not working again. This thing is really starting to be a money pit and we bought it used. Should have it paid off by the end of this year, but it has been frustrating. Fortunately the transmission rebuild was under warranty.
