Hello all,

well I have a 1995 explorer xlt. It has 181xxx kms on it. The truck runs and drives fine, but for some reason when I turn it off and then go to turn it on agian the fuel pump will refuse to prime. I will not hear the buzz. I've tried pressing the fuel shut off button and reseting it and pulling the fuse to the pump under the hood and putting it back in but nothing works. often I have to wait 30-45 minutes and then it will start fine. Anyone have any ideas as to what I should do?

You may want to change the relay, it could be failing.

well that sounds like a good start. I figured out today that if I disconnect the battery, and then reconnect, it starts right away. How would I go about changing the relay?

Easy. What I would do is first, locate the fuel pump relay under the hood. If you've got an owners manual, it'll be in there. Then, the next time you have the problem, swap the relay with one of the other ones that is in that box. If it starts, the relay is the problem, and can be replaced.

Alternatively, you could just buy a new relay and change it, but just because its new, doesn't mean its right.

I tried switching the boxes and it still did not work. It has gotten so bad that I pretty much have to dissconnect and reconnect the battery everytime I go to start it. The fuel pump still seems to run strong as I am having no other issues whatsoever.

Check the contacts on the fuel pump relay socket. When you have a no fuel pump priming situation, use a test light to troubleshoot. I'd start at the inertia switch. IF you dont have power at the inertia switch, then the problem is between the ingition and the inertia switch. If you do have power there, then the problem is between the inertia switch and the fuel pump.

sometimes it will prime for just a second and then stumble and die when I try and fire it up. I am going to replace the PCM relay next.

With the key in the ON postion, it is only supposed to prime for a second or 2. Also, what 'fuel shut off button' are you referring to? Are you talking about the intertia switch?

intertia switch- small red button passenger side? if so that is what Im talking about, sorry i didnt make that clear.
