I opted to cut vs. lower. Sheeeet! If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all!
Took some time to get the kid seat and other crap out of the way. Unbolt the seat, get tools... Drilled a couple peeky holes to be sure I was over the pump. Disconnected batt. and put a rubber mudflap on top of tank and cut a hole. Took a few hours including breaks to thaw out toes. Actually proud of myself on it's appearance.
4:30pm, phone ordered a replacement pump from local parts house, somewhat high but local and good guys.
OMG!!!! $214 out the door; I figured it'd be high but...I'm not high. It's a Carter P74203(Walbro made in USA), are these things indestructable?
I wanted to drive it for Turkey day but I'm going to mail order and just suffer until later and hope for the best.
Anyone have a good recommendation for a pump? I see a few: Carter, Bosch, among other house brands Zone, Napa, Oreilly...
I'm ordering this morning. I saw the same Carter on the Bay($100), same part #, suppose I could use the one in my hand now and return the one from the Bay if'n it's identical. I try to be ethical but...with the money save I could take the family out on T'day.
My experience has been this is one of those items that brand name does not make much difference so long as the pressure specs are correct. On the cheap front, I put in 5 Herko brand pumps between 2 explorers, mustang, intrepid and tahoe. Been 2 years with no issues. They run about $30 shipped with a new sock on ebay. As for the other brands, cannot really say any one in particular was bad since none of them stopped working other than bad gas incident but longest I went before selling car with one was 4 years.
Thanks Ro,
Well my next try is at the Zone, 1hr drive. Airtex E2471, 1-yr warranty, $103 out the door. Hope it fits & lasts. Returning the Carter, saving $100+.
Crazy.

It should fit. Make sure you get a strainer sock. I don't think the airtex comes with one. Will be extra $15 or so. When you are ready to install, make sure there is no plug parts or plastic pieces in the sock before you attach it to the pump. Also be sure to replace the short piece of hose that attaches the pump to the line - held on with 2 small clamps. You most likely do not need to replace the gasket ring where the assembly meets the tank unless it is torn.

Thanks,
It's in, a drop in fit . Yup, the sock was another $20. All the old parts looked great so I was careful not to handle them any more than needed. Key on and the pump gives a quiet whir so after lunch it's time to fire it up and return the "Pump-o-gold", oh, and patch my handywork.
