Here's a tip that saved me several hours on my back and frustration...

I just replaced my in-tank fuel pump on my '88 Ford Ranger. The shop manual calls out a grueling and somewhat messy job of dropping the fuel tank.

Here's my tip:
Pull the bed off! Eight bolts, three screws, and one wiring harness connector and two people can lift the bed right off! It took me less than an hour for the whole job.

For an explorer, you could have a hole cut over the tank (I wish Ford would have provided an access panel) and then Put it back down with hinges or what not. Of course, use some common sense. Cutting with a torch in your explorer near the fuel tank would be extremely dangerous. The method of cutting the floor should prolly be a 'nibbler' tool or what not. Not a flame thrower. Careful!

Actually, I've seen the Explorer tip before. I have never seen a tip for a Ranger.

Sounds like a good idea. I just replaced mine the other day. It had a full tank of gas, and of course I did'nt drain the tank first. Damn that thing was heavy!
