Is the fuel pump located at the top of the tank or the bottom? The reason I ask is because I have not been able to "fill" the tank, it only takes about 11 gallons when it holds 19.3 gal.

If I pull the tank I want to know what to expect.

Thanks,

What makes you think there is a problem with the fuel pump?

Only being able to stick 11.3 gallons in does not mean fuel pump.

The fuel pump is on the top of the tank.

Hi Fortune410,

The truck has 182k on it. If I pull the tank I'm going to replace the pump. What I'm trying to determine is if there is a "straw", if you will, picking-up fuel on the bottom and if the "straw" has broken off at half a tank of fuel.

We may have discussed this one other time and I never bothered to make the correction. But now I have done the ball joints and RA bushings so it feels tight enough to fix a couple other problems.

Thanks for your imput.

Oh I gottcha! Yes with 182K you are due. The fuel pump is a snap once you get the tank down, just remember no sparks! Use a wooden dowl and a rubber mallet to replace the pump, it screws into place and locks.

Yes it is possible you have a problem with the pick up tube, my friends 91 had the same deal, if it drops below a half tank it barely runs, we are dropping his tank this weekend.........

You know, I was unable to get the fuel filter replaced. I had the proper tool, it just would budge. Will that hinder me be getting the tank off?

No because you disconnect the fuel lines at the tank with the same tool. The filters can stick like that. If you are using the plastic ring style tool do yourself a favor and go get the aluminum tool from Pep Boys made just for your fuel filter, it;s like $3 and will make it so much easier! Also they sell replacement pressure clip springs, so if you yank hard enough and do get the lines off the filter, it is likely you will bust the springs inside the pressure fitting, just know that they sell replacement ones for like $1
