Hey, i've been day-dreaming again about what i want to do with my Explorer. I was wondering if anybody had a ball-park estimate on how much it would cost for new headers and full exhaust

are you looking at Y pipe from the headers or true dual exhaust?

Alright, im only 15, so i dont know that much about y pipes and true dual exhaust. I know what they are, but my goal is to maximize the horse power and minimizing the gas-return into my engine, cause now my engine is just inhaling all of the gases due to an exhaust leak. So. I think i want a true dual exhaust.

well headers around around 400-500 bucks, probably for you you're gonna have to do a Y pipe into the catalytic converter and then do a custom cat back exhaust which splits into duals. other wise you will have to buy another catalytic converter to pass emissions. catback exhaust will run you about 300 and labor charges for header install is 3-6 hrs @ 50-65 an hour...so you might wanna try doing them yourself

probably just shy of a grand. Talk to Alec. Hes done just about every exhaust setup there is.

Yeah, i was already planning on doing it myself. I dont want to be the guy who can't change his oil. I want to be the guy who if he had to do an engine swap on the side of the road....okay maybe thats a little durastic, but you know what im sayin. I was looking at some stuff on www.carparts.com and the headers on there are $450.43 and the catback that splits into dual is $236.43. So, now all i gotta do is save the money.
Beings im only 15, im gonna do the headers and exhaust by myself, but my dad will be there so i dont mess things up too bad. LOL. Any websites for buying things like exhaust would be helpful. Thanks

Wait.... you found a catback for an explorer that splits into duals?

No, I dont know why they used that picture. See where it says number of tail pipes?

Oh, yeah. I need to learn more about this stuff..thanx for lettin me see that

I got my dual exhaust custom made using a flowmaster muffler. Cost me about $400 for everything including the stainless tips.

yeah best case buy the muffler online. otherwise let a shop do it all...will save you a ton of headaches....and best part you get to drive to the exhaust place with open headers!

Hate to poke my head in everywhere... but I want to get my X running duals too. I have the true-dual '99 SOHC X model, so I dont think running a true dual system oughtta be overly expensive. (Plus I'm not doing headers)... so whats everyones official opion?

What would be enough backpressure to keep my engine healthy (or is the 'not enough backpressure is damaging' idea a myth?), and a good mellow-toned muffler that will offer 2000-4000 rpm gains (methinks Gibson?)

Thanks,
-----Nate (the intruder:D)
