Went to play in the snow this afternoon, tried to get some chains just in case, but no joy there.

There was about 4 ft of powder on the ground( maybe a ft in the plowed parking lots on top of the pass, Stevens Pass) My son and I played around in it for awhile, drove a bit down the other side of the pass. Came upon a new Toyota Land Cruiser stuck in a snow bank. He had pulled over to let his kid go piss, and went too far into the powder/plowed snow and got high centered. After some digging(which didn't do didly) I hooked a chain to him and with him going in reverse and me pulling, got him out.

Went back to the top of the pass, and a Toyota 4 Runner decided to go behind me and went into some deep powder. I didn't want to get into it myself so used a side angle to try to pull him out, no joy as I couldn't get a good enough angle. A lifted F150 hooked onto him and after a bit pulled him out.

Now the F150 is messing around and on the far side of this parking lot drives into the ditch,(dosn't look like anything is there, so much powder is covering it) and gets stuck. Well I hook onto him, and he's too heavy and I don't have enough traction to yank him out. We drive to the bottom of the parking lot and a F350 SuperDuty 4 door long bed with PowerStroke comes up, hooks onto him and in reverse without spinning a tire pulls him out..

I did have fun though, doing donuts in the snow, and seeing how different the brakes worked with and without ABS worked.. Lets just say without ABS forget about steering with them locked up.. with ABS it NEVER seems to stop, just keeps on rolling even with the pedal down hard. Atleast you can steer with the ABS activated.

I can tell that I need a fore and aft locker(come on ARB) and a winch on the front of it, if I'm going to do any serious playing in incliment weather/roads.

On the way back I was behind a lifted newer Ranger, with RRORC(washington plates) on it, and Rough Rangers on the back of the tail gate.

Sounds like fun, wish I had snow here!

A front/back locker??? ummm you already have one...

As for the ABS, it's doing exactly what it's supposed to... it prevents the wheels from locking so you can steer around the thing you're trying to avoid. It doesn't rewrite the laws of physics, just allows you to better utilize them.

umm, no IFS equipped explorer/ranger has a front locker, and the only thing I have on the rear end is a limited slip..

and for mudding, you don't want ABS kicking in when your trying to stop when your going down a steep hill, want your wheels to dig in and get some traction..

Duh! Don't you remember? Its that colorful ice that they put in the cones and sell down here at the beach year round. You know, right next to that blonde in the thong. :D

C5,

It's good to see someone from Washington. Me and a few RRORC people have been talking about doing a snow run on Dec. 23rd down by Elbe Hills ORV. If you or any other NW ranger, explorer, navajo people are interested, email me.

The area is on the south side of Mt. Rainier, near the Longmeir entrance to the park. I'll be sending out directions, and a meeting time and location here soon. If you give me your email I'd be more than happy to send you that information. Also, there is several RRORC members up in that area that may be coming, maybe we can organize a caravan or something.

Got your email ... thanks.

where i live, i often have to go over steep hills. when i'm in 4x4 because of the snow should i bother to put the tranny in 2nd? thanks for your time.

I've found that 2nd works good when your trying to take off in slippery stuff and just spinning. When you shift to 2nd less torque is getting to the wheels so you don't spin as much and generally can take off.. Alot of new cars have a 2nd gear takeoff button, but all we have to do is manually put the Ex in 2nd and same deal..

How hard it is on the tranny I don't know..

I wish it would snow. I miss Connecticut...:(

lifted F-150s are cool :)

So do I, and I'm IN NY. We did have a little late last Saturday, just enough to cover the roads, but not enough to put it in 4x4 and have fun..... Another Blizzard of '96 would be nice!

It hasn't snowed in Connecticut yet? Hmm, I thought it had. My friends in Amherst MA got like 14 inches earlier in the winter. Oh well. I was in Atlanta for the '96 blizzard, but I think another one of those Nor'easters from '92 would be pretty cool

Depends on where you were. Northern NY and CT got it good, but I'm only 60 miles N of NYC (near Danbury CT), so we were just on the edge of the white stuff.

That sucks. You live in Danbury? I know this is random, but have you ever been to the Military Museum of Southern New England? It's in Danbury, by the airport (or at least it was when I lived up there) and it had some really kick ass military 4x4s. It would be so cool to have one of those old army 4x4s. But I hear they're really hard to come by.

By the way, I'm from New Canaan, so that's why I know the area.

It's still there, down the road from the Danbury Fair Mall. Used to go drinking at the bar next door. Never got drunk enough :nono: to try and drive one of the tanks home tho..... :D
