fusion key

im wanting to get one of these but im not sure if i can. i have a 02 mountaineer that when i bought it from a guy only had one key (idk if he lost the other one or just didnt come with one). now from what ive read(correct me if im wrong) i just have to buy an original key off ebay get it cut and programmed at a locksmith, then buy a fusion key and get that cut and programmed at a locksmith? if the other key was really lost but was still programmed to the car would i need to get another? or do you need to have both keys in hand when programming the fusion key?

The 3rd one you can program yourself, only get one programed by dealer/locksmith

i dont have the second one in hand. i dont even know if there was a second. the guy i bought the car from said he lost it. wouldnt that mean that the lost key is still programmed to the car?:dunno:

I imagine the Edge key would work badass on my Super Dooty?

you don't need to buy an original key first.

I only had 1 key with my 04 when I bought it.
I bought 2 edge keys off eBay.

The lock smith programmed one of the edge keys as the second key.
then he programed the second edge key as my 3rd for free cause programming a 3rd key is pretty easy, you can do it yourself.

He also programmed the fobs too for free.

I was thinking the same thing. I just don't know which of the 5 PATS versions I have.

Th rason why some of us are suggesting doing it this way is that some people have found that the dealers or locksmiths don't want to mess with programing a key that is not for an explorer (even tho we know that it works) if he buys a regular key he'll have no problems getting it programmed and using that one and his current one program whichever "crazy" key he wants to use, but you're right he doesn't have to do it that way, it is merely a suggestion

i think im going to order one. maybe two? is there anything i should be looking for when getting them and what is the average price?

Hey, I bought one, Ace hardware cut it for free...Programmed it myself. Works perfect, even opens rear glass. Larry

They do work on the 3rd Gen's, its the 4th Gens that I thought they didnt work on (I think remote worked but key wouldnt program or vice versa).

So i was wondering if anyone knew what was different about these keys or if someone has tried one that is supposed to work on the 06-08's before I sink $75 into it.

This is a very interesting thread.
Can somebody confirm the lowdown for me....:

1:
Any uncut Fusion key from Ebay is good, right? Even if they don't specifically mention 2004 Explorer, etc... What they currently offer is said to be good for 2007-2008 Five Hundred, Taurus, Freestyle, Escape, Focus, Fusion, Edge.
It will still work on a 3rd gen EX, right??

2:
Programming procedure for TRANSMITTER (from manual):

To reprogram the remote entry
transmitters:

1. Ensure the vehicle is electronically unlocked.
2. Put the key in the ignition.
3. Turn the key from the 1 (LOCK) position to 3 (ON).
4. Cycle eight times rapidly (within 10 seconds) between the 1 (LOCK)
position and 3 (ON). Note: The eighth turn must end in the 3 (ON)
position.
5. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been activated.
6. Within 20 seconds press any button on the remote entry transmitter.
Note: If more than 20 seconds have passed you will need to start the
procedure over again.
7. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that this remote entry
transmitter has been programmed.
8. Repeat Step 6 to program each additional remote entry transmitter.
9. Turn the ignition to the 1 (LOCK) position after you have finished
programming all of the remote entry transmitters.
10. The doors will lock, then unlock, to confirm that the programming
mode has been exited.

3:
Programming procedure for KEY (from manual):

Programming spare keys
You can program your own coded keys to your vehicle.
Tips:
• A maximum of eight keys can be coded to your vehicle.
• Only use Securilock keys.
• You must have two previously programmed coded keys (keys that
already operate your vehicle’s engine) and the new unprogrammed
key(s) readily accessible.
• If two previously programmed coded keys are not available, you must
take your vehicle to your dealer to have the spare key(s)
programmed.
Please read and understand the
entire procedure before you begin.
1. Insert the first previously
programmed coded key into the
ignition.
2. Turn the ignition from the 1 (OFF) position to the 3 (ON) position.
Keep the ignition in the 3 (ON) position for at least three seconds, but
no more than 10 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition to the 1 (OFF) position and remove the first coded
key from the ignition.
4. Within ten seconds of turning the ignition to the 1 (OFF) position,
insert the second previously coded key into the ignition.
5. Turn the ignition from the 1 (OFF) position to the 3 (ON) position.
Keep the ignition in the 3 (ON) position for at least three seconds, but
no more than 10 seconds.
6. Turn the ignition to the 1 (OFF) position and remove the second
previously programmed coded key from the ignition.
7. Within twenty seconds turning the ignition to the 1 (OFF) position
and removing the previously programmed coded key, insert the new
unprogrammed key (new key/valet key) into the ignition.
8. Turn the ignition from the 1 (OFF) position to the 3 (ON) position.
Keep the ignition in the 3 (ON) position for at least three seconds but
not more than 10 seconds.
9. Remove the newly programmed coded key from the ignition.
If the key has been successfully programmed it will start the vehicle’s
engine and the theft indicator light will illuminate for three seconds and
then go out.
If the key was not successfully programmed, it will not start your
vehicle’s engine and the theft indicator light will flash on and off, and
you may repeat Steps 1 through 5. If failure repeats, bring your vehicle
to your dealer to have the new key(s) programmed.
To program additional new unprogrammed key(s), wait twenty seconds
and then repeat this procedure from Step 1.

THEORETICALLY, NO DEALER VISIT IS NECESSARY, right?

as long as u have at least 2 existing keys, then ur good to go... i have an 02 explorer and the key i bought on ebay said 04+ it would work on explorers but it works perfect on mine... no worries

i wanna buy this key from ebay. i was wondering if i could follow the same program GregV8 used in his post to program the key and remote. the only thing i would have to do is get it cut first, right?

Bumping this:

My old fusion key quit qorking a couple weeks ago, the ebay seller offered me another one and I just got it today. I had it cut and when I went to re program it it would not work. I tried 3 times nd on the third (or maybe it was fourth, IDR) it bumped off the remote that came with the truck. Any suggestions?
