My Ex has been doing this for some time, but now I smell it while driving.

Used to be, when I’d shut the engine off, you could smell gas fumes from the engine bay. Not the smell of gas, but fumes. Almost smells like paint or something.

Now I can smell it while driving. It’s coming from the purge canister. Over the years, I’ve changed all the related components except the hoses. But when you get close to the canister, it’s definitely coming from it.

What may be causing such a build up like this?

Canister purge solenoid is not working

Your charcoal canister is worn out and cannot hold fuel vapors anymore without smelling

There are posts about how to refresh these old charcoal
Canisters

The canister purge valve is supposed to
Open when you are at full throttle and allow the due tank vapors to be burned through the intake manifold

Inspect all
Plumbing and hoses make sure no spits or cracks and all connections solid

I’ve replaced both of these parts, they have less than 10k on them. And the smell never went away with either. It’s entirely possible that one of them is bad I suppose.

Check the fuel filler neck and cap
Might be as simple as replacing the fuel cap
Do you ever have pressure build up in the fuel tank? Or a sucking sound when you remove the gap cap?

Make sure the hose that goes into the intake is hooked up and not corroded

You can remove the canister purge valve from the evap line and see if the smell changes? Just for testing
