Get an ohmmeter, and locate the blue 8-position connector under the master cylinder. It's pretty obvious, I just looked at mine. Open the connector and hold the side where the wires go down to the frame. Find the yellow/white wire on that connector. Measure the resistance at that wire to ground. Proper reading is 145 ohms for full, 22.4 ohms for empty. Anything else is probably a bad sender, especially if it failed when did the hose deal. Be sure you measure the side going to the tank. The other side goes to the firewall and on to the gauge cluster. If you DO measure a range of 22-125 ohms, then the problem is up in the gauges, and we can go from there.
The gas sender/pump is not a fun one, there are threads on how to cut a hatch to it so you don't have to drop the tank.
