Gas in Oil

Took my X to the mechanic yesterday to track down the dreaded pinging noise. He informed me that there was only about 2 1/2 quarts of oil in the pan and the rest was gas. I changed the oil myself a week ago with 5 quarts. He believes that there is a fuel injector problem causing the cylinder wall to be sprayed with too much gas which is washing the oil out and causing the noise I am hearing. My fuel mileage and power have been suffering lately so I am inclined to believe him. He changed the oil and filter and asked me to check it today. I drove about 300 mi, got home, checked the oil and sure enough, it smelled like gas and was very thin. Anyone have any ideas on this?I have never heard of this problem.

How can he tell how much is gas and how much is oil?

injectors stuck (or bad) (or) bad fuel pressure regulator.
needs fixed immediately !

not as familiar with fords, but possibly a clogged fuel return line or bypass?

hmm i wonder if im having the same prob? cause well my gas mileage sucks at 7-8 mpg and the smell of gas with NO visible leaks and no drips after the car is parked over night or if i have it @ idle for a while ethier maybe i should check my oil huh lol

I'm not sure how he knew how much gas was in the oil. I'm assuming it had seperated and he could tell when he drained it. My mileage sucks for a 4.0 at about 15-16 MPG. Does anyone think that this problem could be related to something else?

Got it back today and I must say.... what a huge improvement. Like a new truck. Mechanic found a fuel injector stuck open and replaced it. Ran it for an hour on the scope afterwords with 0 problems. Lucky for me it was only one injector. Completed the tune up with Cooper Discoverer A/T's and Sylvania Silverstars. Happy again!

15-16 should be pretty normal for any SUV based on weight and lack of aerodynamics.

check yours too.
also, check your O2 sensors. ive got a bad one on my S10, and its running like a pig. the computer keeps richening the mixture due to a bad O2 reading, and the mileage sucks.

Hm. How should oil smell? When I change mine I notice a strong smell that reminds me of gas.

Minw smelled of gas strongly. It was also very thin. I ran 5W30 and I know that's pretty thin, but when the gas was getting in the oil and I pulled out the dipstick, it was as thin as water on there. There are some places that will test your old oil if you send them some. I would look into that if you're not sure. I am very happy with the difference that new fuel injector made. BTW- I'm giving high marks to the Silverstars also. Was rainy here last night and they are super bright and white. Big change over stock. I changed the first one and turned them on with one new and one stock and could tell a huge difference. Even the beam pattern seemed cleaner.
