Gas mileage.

im sure about the milage and the fuel that's a one way trip to visit my brother. and i double checked the milage with map quest. the driving was nearly 100% highway as i live about 3 miles from the interstate. i was running about 2000 to 2500 rpm. the only mod thats been done is the tranny is a reman'd so im not sure if that will make a big difference it is still the 4 speed A4LD. LOL and my tranny lasted until 205K then i had to replace it. I went with a reman'd unit.

now the motor is like new. i checked the compression about a month ago and its nearly perfect.the weak part on these exploder's are the tranny's. the torque and horsepower of the motor is nearly maxing out the ammount the orignal stock tranny's can handle.

Felt like it, wanted to see if it made any difference in performance or mileage. Nothing conclusive yet but it does seem to lessen my lifter tick.

The only thing higher octane will do is reduce pinging/detonating which you may be confusing for lifter tick.

... it will also lighten the wallet if used in a motor not designed for it.

Interesting, I will have to do more research. I just have this annoying tendency to dump various things into my motor to see what happens, like injector cleaners and oil additives. Bad habit Thanks.

Btw, the tick/chatter was just at idle, and I only hear it occasionally on cold days

with 3.23 gears, and 4x4 driving civily mixed 16-18. This is not my daily so the more often i drive it the better millage it get. In snow driving sideways cause its more fun about 12.

Like a few have said before mpg greatly depends on driving style, terrain, maintance, and most anything else you that can be a variable. its winter so everyone is running on winter gas aka lower millage. There is another thread on here where people are claiming high 20s for mpg.

Sounds about right, especially if you've got tall gears and/or an auto.
Last 2 tanks of mixed driving I got 16MPG, this latest tank I drove around in 4th at any speed below 60 (at or above 2000RPMs), I got 17.25MPG.
4th with 3.27s gives slightly higher RPMs than 5th with 3.73s, 5th gives me 1600 RPMs at 55, way too low, It's getting 3.73s if I keep it, 3.27s are torque, and for the most part, mileage robbing.

When I came up from Georgia to New York, I was consistently getting 420+ miles a tank, which comes out to be a little over 22 MPG, but I'm sure I still had a gallon or two left over when I filled back up, so I'd say it was more like 24 MPG or so. Also, I had 1500 lbs. of stuff loaded on board, so that's pretty impressive to me, heh. Before I loaded it up, it weighed close to 4300 lbs. (with an empty gas tank), then after I loaded it up, it sat at a little over 5800 lbs. (with a full gas tank), lol. And it wasn't squatting at all!

It would average around 21 when it was newer, but now it's more around 18-19mpg. 230,000mi and even the O2 sensors are original. Come to think of it, replacing them might get some of that mileage back....

EDIT: Forgot to mention that it has 3.73 gears and stock height tires.

How do 3.27 gears rob fuel mileage? My '94 Ranger 4.0 Auto 4x4 has 3.27 gears with 235/75 R 15 tires and I can get 23-25 mpg highway out of it on a regular basis, I was able to get 27 mpg once, but have not been able to since. My parents '94 Explorer is the same way, 4x4 4.0 Auto with 3.27 gears and 235/75 R15 tires and can get around 23 mpg highway and 18-21 mixed. Driving at 55 mph, the tach on both is only at 1,500 rpm.

And that RPM for that speed is too low. I've already gained 1.25MPG by running it at 2000+RPMs instead of 1600.

Doesn't mean it doesn't have tall gears, stock 3.27s are a perfect example.

im a bit new to this so tall gears means what exactly. and stocks are 4.10 am i right? i have a feeling im wrong. and mine runs about 1500 as well at 55 and around 2300-2500 running 70-75.

No. A tuneup would do more for economy than a lifetime of using some snake oil additive like Z-Max.
