I had a question for all of you explorer fanatics. Is it possible to take the gauge cluster out of a 2001+ explorer sport, and put them into a 97 sport? I have looked at them and they appear to be the same but I have not had the oppertunity to take a 2001+ sport dash appart to see if they are identical. Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

thanks...

I think its' all the same, but you'd need to figure out what to do about the odometer.

on rangerpowersports has an instruction with pics that tell you how to remove the odometer. i'll see if i can find the direct link and post it.

edit: here it is gauge cluster link

Hey, I did it, got any questions PM me, i got it all working. OH, and BTW, come to the silver lakes run in michigan and you can see it personally :-)

Hi,
I'm looking to do this swap on my "new to me" 1997 explorer sport. Is this just a straight "bolt on"? What all is involved? I'm looking at 2000 up sport gauges.
Thanks!

Yes it is all bolt in. You can get the white faced gear selector from Ford for around $15.

Gear selecter? Pardon my ignorance.

You know, the window that says what gear your in. P R N D 1 2

Is it ok, to use the one I currently have?

Yeah but it won't match the white gauges on the Sport cluster.

Ah, I see. Maybe that would be a good idea then. I thought maybe it was for mechanical reasons. Thanks alot man!

Now pardon my ignorance! Will this swap work in an XLT? I'm not familiar with the Sports and not sure if the gauges are any different. So the 00 and 01 Sport gauges are the ones to look for?

I have a set of these gauges that I am going to list in the for sell forum if anyone is interested. Mine only has about 30K on them and have the faceplate for the shift indicator already. Nothing extra to buy. Let me know if you are interested.

Ronnie,

We're able to switch out the odo, correct? If so, I'm interested. PM me with some details (you know, the dough :p).

No your not able to switch out the odometer.. You should be able to take it to the ford dealer and see if they will roll it forward for you ( I know they will not roll them backwards).

I know for my ranger I lucked out I found one from a 96 that had roughly the same mileage (1K difference).

Now my brother in law tryied to roll forward one on his own and it screwed up and would only work for a 100 miles before it wouldn't roll forward anymore.

So they will work. I'll keep an eye out, thanks.

Joe
