Ford Explorer 2002
Hey All,

I am 29yo, live in Australia NSW, currently have a Ford Explorer 2002, not sure for how long I will have it due it causing me a lot of problems atm.

If anyone can help I would be more then thankful, my issue started a few months ago, gearbox started to not select gears, I got a odb2 connector and got the error saying that the issue is the TPS, and the gearbox fails to neutral, I have replaced the TPS and I think the problem has gotten worse, I have tested the TPS with a multimeter and all the voltages are what they should be, with the old TPS if I disconnected the TPS and drove it for 10mins then plugged it back in it seem to be back to normal and working great, the time that it worked for got less and less each time till I was forced to replace it.

I know this might not be the right place to post most of this but I am getting desperate.

Hello mate.

might be some differences in terminology here. You are saying gear box, to which I believe you are referring to the transmission.

You also are speaking of the TPS sensor, which I understand to be Throttle Posistion Sensor. Are you meaning the transmission range sensor which is mounted to the transmission?

Hey thanks for the reply, Yep Gearbox, I have since been informed that the error that I am getting is P1700, so not the TPS, the place I took it must have read the error code wrong, well the meaning for it.

See the last post in this thread.

Explorers are great vehicles. There are a ton of them out there. This site is primarily for those that have problems. Those who don't have problems don't search out these sites.
Now, if I didn't live inside the continental USA, I wouldn't own one. It seems getting parts and service abroad is very pricey and difficult.

Thanks for that, Yeah I did find someone say to check the oneway clutch, I plan on looking at it this weekend, if I can work out where it is located.

There seems to be a fair few of them when I look at the repair manual.

So a bit more information, I can manually shift from 1-3 gear and drive it...also once the vehicle reaches a certain speed the tranny can be shifted back into drive, I have dropped the sump out of the gearbox and only found a very small bit of steel, The oil was still red colour looked just as good as new.

Not sure what the next step is, anyone have any ideas?

OK so update, I emptyed the gearbox of oil, put 10Lt in it and I drove it 30km's but would only select 1st to 3rd gears untill I was up to 70km/s then wen't into park without an issue, and parked it, put another 1Lt of oil in it and now it will not find any gears at all. I couldn't find anything inside the gearbox that might be causing the issue, when I put it in to gear i can hear it select the gear and I can hear something going around but the rear tail shaft and front one don't move, not sure if it is a transmission issue now or a transfer case issue.
