I just thought it would be cool to have an indicator that tells you which gear the truck is currently in, and whether the TCC is engaged or not. In other words a small light for 1rst, 2nd, 3rd 4th, 5th etc, and another light that says TCC. As your driving the tranny shifts automatically and an indicator lights up for each gear shift. A lot of times mine shifts into second gear after rolling just 10 feet from a stop, or it at least feels like it- those are the times I'd like to know which gear it's actually in.

Does someone make an indicator like this? It could be made pretty nice looking and mount in the dash area... Just a strip of 1 through 5 lights inside a small housing....

no

tcc?

maybe a PDA might, maybe be able to read and display this through the obd2?

The TCC is torque converter clutch. It feels like another gear being shifted into when it engages.

I forget what vehicle communication protocol the second gen explorer uses, I think it's J1850? anyway, if you could interface into it, possibly through the OBD2? you might be able to read the transmission signals IF its computer controlled, which I think it is in the 98+

Since each gear, and the tcc, is controlled by the ECM grounding the appropriate solenoid(s), it is entirely possible to use a series of low voltage relays/modules such as a TR4 to make what you want. I'm just shooting off the top of my head here, but I'm willing to bet it could be done.

Another option may be Hobbs switches at the pressure taps. The model of transmission you have would have to support a tap in each gear though.
