:) ring & pinion kit guesstimate on what it would like to put a lower gear in my rear end for more pulling power,(parts only)I think it will be cheaper then going to a V8 & a heavier tranny. would love to change it over to a mark 8 4.6 4 cam engine and trans.. explorer is a 1991 xlt and I believe that they have a lower gear than the 1992 on up..but I need something lower..;)

what gear ratio does it have now? how low are you looking to go? what is the primary use of the vehicle? if its 4wd you will need to do the front as well otherwise it witll grenade itself if you ever try to use 4x4

Do 3.73's minimum($150 on eBay), add another trans cooler. It doesn't matter what coolers are on it now, add another one, in parallel. Don't ever tow with overdrive, it is not worth the risk. Those trans rebuilds are over $1500, avoid that. Good luck,

Since you have not posted what ratio you currently have, I think it would help with the replies to state what ratio is in your vehicle. If you are not certain, crawl under the vehicle and get the ratio info off the ID tag. There are multiple 8.8 gear sets for sale on ebay, various ratios.

my 94 and 96 both had 3.73s stock with tracloc

Yes, and the 3.55 was about the highest ever used in 91/92 trucks. In 93 the 3.73 was very common in 4WD trucks, my 91 4WD has 3.27 gears.

gear ratio

my ratio is 3.07 geared high.... like taking off in third gear..I need something lower than this, but I don't want to go to a low gear like a 4-10 or 4-11

theres an easier way to do that, get the axle code off the drivers door and come on this site and use their code to ratio chart.

HAS A 3.07,LOOKING TO GO TO A 3.73...

...the stock gears in my 91 4x4 were 3.73's...in fact, i have the front ring and pinion for sale /used/cheap....sorry, no rear gears but it's a start...:D

Boatmotor, very well aware of the doortag codes, but rearends can be changed and sometimes are. With 3.08 being your current ratio, you have many choices. Personally, I like the 3.73's. You should have no problem finding a set. There are several for sale on ebay at reasonable prices. I would recommend staying away from the aftermarket gears.

There was a new Ford set that sold for $145 a week ago, with shims, bearings, and crush sleeve. There are tons of used gears always. Ford gears generally don't make noise even after tons of mileage.

I got better fuel mileage with my 93 and 3.73's than the 91 with 3.27's. That's a good choice, the 3.73:1 higher ratio. Night,
