Gear selctor hard to move...

Hi everyone!..new to the forum, got some tips all ready. I bought my first Explorer (2001 Sport 120,x.. miles).

The column shift is difficult to move from Park, N,D etc..I ran the search bar, but the topics it came back with don t really sound like the same problem I have. The gear indicator does not line up, but saw how to fix that. I have not had a chance to look at it, but would like some direction before I take the covers off.

99% replace it, the casing that the cable is in worn and bind the cable.

if you want to confirm this, disconnect the cable from the transmission and the the back of the gear selector, and move the cable.

but they wear out.

Is this a big job?..What size cable would I need?..Was on autozone.com had 5 different lengths..Or just have the local garage do it?..Thanks for everyone's help!
