gen 1 R-12 vs R134a

Two other things to add, may I.

The flexible quick connections are prone to leaking, and the green o-rings in them need to be replaced due to that. The best answer is to install a rigid lock on every flexible quick connection, that will essentially make those o-rings last decades. Search for the aftermarket locks which have Allen head bolts holding two aluminum halves together. They come in various sizes, to match the connections. They used to be about $10-$15 each.

There are also refrigerants you can use which are propane based. Hunt for R-12a and R-134a I believe they are called. A member of a Mark VII forum used that, and he was very pleased. It was priced well compared to R-12, which BTW we now know is no worse than R-134(government scam).

well new problem, short very intermittant cycling, then some slipping of the clutch, Hooked up the meters and it was short cycling when the pressures looked normal. I check the low pressure switch with a ohm meter and it was acting odd, on resistance showing 10-20 ohms at times, 0 at others when it was on. I jumped the sender and the slipping stopped. I am sure its not too much head pressure as I was monitoring it and it would slip even when under 200 psi (about 90 outside temp).

I have a new switch coming in, and I plan to replace the harness since it has green goo in it.

got a switch and harness from the yard, had to use some contract cleaner to get it working, more green goo, finally started and seems to be working as it should again. will have to postpone any major work until I get a handle on it.

looking at vac pumps, see on at harbor freight for 100$.

BTW and FYI: I have the bigger brother (3 CFM, two stage, ~$150) of this pump and used it few weeks ago on my 1st gen Explorer. Seems to work OK, except it's got really hot when working. I've put a fan next to it, just in case. I would strongly recommend the bigger pump - not because of CFM, but because of it being two stage.

And, BTW, here is 25% off single-item coupon code for Harbor Freight Tools, valid till 09/13

I am seeing some two stage jobs on ebay for around 100$, not in a huge hurry so will keep shopping. think HF wanted 150$ for the same thing so that is not too far away from ebay.
