I was wondering how easy the tune-ups are on the 3rd Gen V8 Explorers. Here are some questions I had:

1. Are the plugs and fuel filter easily reachable by hand to replace or do you need a special tool because of clearance or other reason? I have a spark plug socket. Is that all I would need?
2. I'm assuming this has a coil pack set-up? Are mine still good @ 72K miles? I think they're original.
3. Worth putting a K&N performance air filter in it?
4. Does it even have a PCV valve?

The spark plugs are very easy to change. They will have a COP(Coil On Pug) with an 8mm? screw if I remember. Take that off, pull the COP out and the you'll need an extension to get to the plug. Make sure you gap and use anti-seize on the plug. The hardest to change(not really that hard) is the passenger side back plug. I used two 3" extensions(use the first to get the socket in, then attach the second to get to it) and you should be fine. I can change plugs in 30 minutes if there's not holdup. The fuel filter is easy to change and you will need a special tool to change it. Should be a Sticky at the top of the forum about changing fuel filters.

I have 127,000 on mine and they work great. If you are having missing issues and you have changed the plugs then it's possible one or two could be bad.
3. Worth putting a K&N performance air filter in it?
Yes, also drill some holes on the front of the airbox(lower side, below filter) for some better airflow. I can post some pics if you need to see what I mean. I still have the paper filter though.
4. Does it even have a PCV valve?
Can't answer that right now and will get back to you.

Limited02.... good sharp answers.... nice and detailed....

As a complement... this engine has PVC valve... as fas I read...

Instead of changing COP's, check resistance in them. If all are roughly the same, it's unlikely any need to be done. Instead consider changing the plug boots which will sometimes make people think a coil is bad.

i like my K&n cone set up

check the video on my signature will give you idea of sound you will get with cone.

It does have a PCV Valve - actually an expensive one.
