Hello All,

I'm looking to get a used Ford Explorer with 4-wheel drive. Right now, I'm looking through the 99-01 area.

I've done a lot of searching through this site and really got a lot of my questions answered already. However, I'm still a bit curious about the automatic transmission options that were available.

On most of the Explorers I looked at, the shifter was on the steering column. But, on another I looked at, it was on the console.

I was thinking that maybe the one on the console was a 5-speed, but I'm not too sure.

Anyway, does someone have an idea as to why one shifter would be on the console and the others on the steering column? Oh, and the one in the console was an XLT.

Thanks and sorry for asking such a noobish questions.

in United States all automatic transmission equipment explorer have the shifter in the steering column.

automatic explorers with transmission shifter in the center console were available only in United Kingdom and Australia.

If you saw one in US is propably modified/special order or is a manual.

Thank you for the warm welcome! :D

Per your request, I went to the dealer's website and got the photo.

On the vehicle's description, it's listed as an Auto. It does kind of look like an Auto as well.

You mentioned that it could be like a custom-order. Would that steering wheel also be a custom? That is TAN!

Do you think it's a custom order or could it be the 5-speed Auto?

I'm not too sure where I was looking, but I saw a replacement console for the Explorer for these years. On it, it mentioned that it would not fit the 5-speed tranny. That's why I was originally thinking this one is a 5-speed automatic w/OD.

I'd very much prefer it if it that's the case. Something about having the shifter on the console that's very settling.

There's a Toyota logo on the steering wheel. Looks like they got their pics mixed up.

Will do!

I have a question - if I got a CarFax report, would that tell me everything anyway?

It's a Sunday and the dealer is closed and I'm just kind of curious. :o

Thanks!

Good Call!

I thought there was something weird about that steering wheel. I don't even have an Explorer [yet] and noticed that the wheel wasn't the same as the others. From what I've seen, cars with the tan interior still have a black steering wheel. I just kind of figured it was part of some package.

I went back to the dealer's http://www.autotrader.com/dealers/i...008&start_year=1998&body_style=SUV&cardist=25 just to make sure it was an Explorer I was looking at. I think you're right - they just messed up the photos.
