- 1995 Explorer 4wd 4.0
The other day I was test driving my Mom's explorer because of the O/D light flashing. Supposedly, when the O/D light is flashing, the over drive is disabled and the transmission is in limp mode. I counted the gears from a dead stop up to 45 and noticed that it shifted in all 4 gears. I used my Matco scanner to pull codes but there were none in regards to the transmission. I came across a thread here about reseting the O/D light and so I disconnected the battery for an hour and reconnected it to see if it worked. It did and so test drove it again. I counted the speeds from a dead stop again and noticed this time that there were a total of 5 speeds. I was surprised because I didn't think Ford made a 5 speed auto until recently. I looked up the specs on the truck on this board and found that Ford did indeed make a 5-speed auto for the Explorer but not until 1997. Has anybody else here with a 1995 Explorer ever counted there shifts from a dead stop? There will be 3 shifts for a four speed and 4 shifts for a 5 speed naturally. Just to be sure I wasn't imagining things, I counted the shifts again this time with the O/D switched off and I counted 4 speeds.
