General questions about Exp 2008

I had an explorer 1995 and recently bought a 2008 XLT, i feel some differences and i need to know if they are normal:

1- the steering on the 2008 is much harder than the 1995, is it normal?
2- i feel the compressor is working all the time when heating or cooling is on.

depends on which setting your on for #2...if your on any of the defrosters or MAX a/c i believe it always runs the compressor..not sure on #1
