2004 Explorer Eddie Bauer
I'm new to this forum and after contemplating moving into another vehicle with less miles, I've decided to hold onto my 2004 Eddie Bauer. At 129,000 miles, I'm looking to put some money into it to get me another 100,000 or so. I don't have money to waste, so I want to be smart about where it goes. I've owned the car for the last 65,000 miles and really like it. The one thing that concerns me is the transmission as it is showing some wear and slipping during shifts every now and then. The other area I'd hope to improve is the MPG. So my questions are: 1) Should I bite the bullet and get the tranny overhauled or just hope a general service does the trick?; 2) Is there anything that really works (other than driving habits) to help with the MPG on this 4.0 V6? Any feedback from the experienced owners will be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Ed

Driving style affects your mileage greatly. Here is a thread about eeking out the best mileage possible from a 4.0:

If the tranny is acting up I wouldn't spend any money on fuel economy "tricks" until that's resolved. A slipping tranny will use more fuel.
