Okay my transfer case actuator motor is dead. I'm going to replace this myself because the shop told me it was gonna be $450 to replace it. I think I could save myself $200 by doing this myself. I have an idea on how to go about this replacement. If anyone knows anything for me to look out for or special tools I'll need please let me know. Thanks.

Looking at my Helm manual, and assuming your transfer case is the same as the 97 transfer case, there are two bolts, one retainer clip and one plug to deal with and it is off. It does not appear that any special tools are required.

There are three or four 13mm bolts that hold the motor to the t-case. Remove them and with a screwdriver pop the motor off (its sealed to the case w/RTV). You will either have to cut and splice the wires at the harness or remove each pin from the plug (it depends on how the replacement motor is setup).

Are you sure it is dead? Mine wouldn't work for a while and I just kept "exercising" it and it started again. It did click however, so if yours is not clicking, it pobably is bad or out of adjustment. You might search for it on this site because I found several good posts on replacing, adjusting, etc. The motor has feedback contacts on it that tell it where to stop and start. If I remember it is pretty easy to pull off the cap and clean them.

I have removed the motor and cleaned it. It's just burnt out I guess. I had a mechanic look at it too and they said yep its dead.

Mr. Steve.

I broke one of the caps on my motor (the one with three metal tabs holding a brass/copper 1" washer). Can I get this from you? Would be glad to pay or help you in return with the change out.

Let me know, mine works now but you can here it rattle around.

If you are talking about the one off my old motor I am sure this could be arranged, but I am not sure when I am going to do this fix, probably fairly soon.

Yes, the one from the old motor. If you live near me, I can help you out as I just completed mine last weekend and have all the necessary tools.

mrsteve,

any luck with the motor?

I have not yet purchased a new motor. I still looking around to see where I can get it the cheapest. I am waiting to hear back from one supplier. I'll keep you all posted. Thanks

Steve
