Me again, Well, guys $1600.00 spent and I still have an explorer that loses RPM and dies only in reverse. Does anyone have a clue as to what this could be? Would an IAC valve be the problem? Help!

Do you have a warranty... Have you gone to the dealership ...? Take it some where and say you wan't the problem fied and ytour not leaving untill all your problems are solved.

Sounds like an IAC to me. Some folk here have switched their own and say it is pretty easy according to them.

Heck, I would put in a new IAC for for sh1ts and giggles. After spending $1600, an IAC will only be chump change, and it is easy to replace by yourself.

DONT rule out the EEC itself.

Lots of time when driveability issues like this cannot be found you may want to perform a complete pinout of the computer (dealer), or swap it with a similar EEC and see if the problem still exists......

I have found EEC's at junk yards for $35-$200, usually they have stacks youhave to wade through to find your matching calibration code.....

Stumbles in reverse only?????

If you start in Neutral, then shift into D, does it stumble or does it idle normally?

I'm wondering if it stumbles because of the load on the engine (Forward or Reverse) and it just so happens that you put it into Reverse first because its the closest position to Park.

If it only has problems in R, that would seem to be a tranny prob. If it has problems whenever there is a load (D or R) then it could be an IAC valve issue.

For $1600 it sounds like

you went the replacement transmission route, after you had allready changed the torque converter. Hate to say it but I think you are barking at the wrong end. I could see something happening in the rear brakes, like a broken spring on the shoe that causes the brake to lock up in reverse only. I had a self adjusting cable snap on my 92 Explorer. The end loop lodged between the shoe and the drum. If you were going slow and gently put on the brakes, the rear wheel would lock up and squeel the tire. At higher speeds, everything was fine and there was never any noise. It's either something like this or they rebuilt your same transmission and put back in a defective one way clutch.
